Tuesday girls soccer: Holmen scores twice in second half to beat Onalaska; Aquinas tops Central and West Salem shuts out Arcadia

HOLMEN — The Holmen High School girls soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to collect a 2-0 MVC victory over visiting Onalaska on Tuesday.

The 10th-ranked Vikings (10-3-1, 8-0-0) were off target on a penalty kick on the final minute of the first half but made good on two good opportunities after halftime.

Senior Peyton Schneider converted a long-range free kick seven minutes into the second half, and junior Lydia Sader’s corner kick corner kick found the back of the net in the 77th minute to produce the final score.

The goal was Sader’s ninth of the season.

Holmen put eight of its 11 second-half shots on goal, but Onalaska goalkeeper Avery Cowley was up to the challenge on most of them.

Junior Moira Linse had four saves and sophomore Reagan Jessie one for the Vikings, who host Chippewa Falls (2-7-1) on Thursday.

Aquinas 4, Central 2

LA CROSSE — The second-place Blugolds, who are ranked ninth in Division 4 by state coaches, scored twice in each half for a win at Fields for Kids.

Aquinas (11-1-0, 7-1-0 MVC) won its eighth consecutive game since a loss to Holmen and had four players score one goal each.

The Blugolds received goals from Anna Binsfeld in the second minute and Hannah Miller in the 14th for a 2-0 lead. Alexa Myre assisted on Miller’s score.

Central senior Grace Wilkerson then scored the first of her two goals — this one with an assist from Brooke Thomson — in the 17th minute to cut her team’s deficit to 2-1 after one half.

Morghan Gerling and Alaina Elias scored the Aquinas goals in the second half for a 4-1 lead. Myre assisted on Gerling’s in the 51st minute, and Elias scored unassisted in the 59th.

Wilkerson’s second goal came with an assist from Mae Yang in the 72nd minute.

Cam Woyczik made two saves for the RiverHawks (6-4-1, 2-4-1), and Madelynn Grossbach had six for the Blugolds.

West Salem 5, Arcadia/Independence 0

ARCADIA — The fourth-place Panthers (5-4-2, 4-2-2 MVC)) scored two goals in the first half and three in the second to shut out the Raiders.

Maya Hoff scored once in each half, and Ava Schuster provided the first goal of the game and sent West Salem toward a 2-0 halftime lead.

Emily Graham scored the third and fourth goals before Hoff finished things off with her second.
