LA CROSSE — Sophomore Tommy Check, whose availability was in question this spring after he broke his left ankle in February, was on top of his game for the Logan High School baseball team on Tuesday.
Check, who returned and played in several spots for the Rangers this season, pitched in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal and shut fifth-seeded G-E-T down on one hit in a 1-0 victory.
Fourth-seeded Logan (16-10) advances to play at top-seeded Wisconsin Dells on Wednesday after Check struck out 10 and walked two in the shutout.
The Red Hawks were held hitless until Sam De Jager singled to left field with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Check struck out the side in the fifth inning.
The Rangers scored their un in the bottom of the first when Preston Elston singled to right field and brought home center fielder Sam Diehl, who led off with a single and moved to second base on a passed ball.
Diehl was 2 for 3 with a double, and first baseman Jesse Lycke double for Logan, which had six hits, walked four times and struck out eight times.
Lycke was also hit by a pitch twice, and Check walked twice.
Aquinas 12, Adams-Friendship 2 (6)
LA CROSSE — The second-seeded Blugolds (17-5) scored eight times in the sixth inning to end its semifinal and earn a home championship game against third-seeded Mosinee on Wednesday.
Aquinas had five hits in the sixth and added those to a walk, an error and one batter getting hit by a pitch in the outburst that ended the game.
Center fielder Ryan Johnson, left fielder Cullen Swanson and second baseman Parks Tobin all had two hits for the Blugolds, who finished with nine hits and drew 10 walks.
Pitcher Waylon Hargrove and first baseman Aedan David each drove in two runs, and David had a double. Johnson had two of his team’s six stolen bases and had one successful steal of home.
Designated hitter Landon Teachout had a single and walked twice, and Hargrove struck out 10m walked one, allowed four hits and one earned run in a complete game.
Division 1
Holmen 6, Sun Prairie West 5 (11)
HOLMEN — The fifth-seeded Vikings (17-7) advanced by scoring twice in the bottom of the 11th inning against the 12th-seeded Wolves.
Holmen plays at fourth-seeded Middleton for a regional title on Thursday.
Left fielder Riley Weisbecker led off the 11th with a single to right field before second baseman Nolan Lomas tripled to center field and scored on a West error. Weisbecker stole second base before the double.
Holmen also tied the game at 4 with a run in the fifth inning, and that’s where the score remained until the Wolves pushed one run across in the top of the 11th.
Lomas was 3 for 5, drove in three runs and stole one base.
Center fielder Mason Flury was 3 for 4 with an RBI and one stolen base, and shortstop Nolan Mashak went 2 for 5 with a double.
Chris Holmes pitched six innings and Alex Goryl five. Holmes struck out six and allowed five hits and no earned runs.
Onalaska 8, Madison West 6
ONALASKA — The eighth-seeded Hilltoppers (14-9) beat the ninth-seeded Regents with a six-run bottom of the sixth inning.
Eleven batters stepped to the plate in the sixth, and Onalaska turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 lead and secured a Thursday championship game at top-seeded Madison Memorial.
The first three runs came when the Hilltoppers loaded the bases, and Bradyn DeLong, Tyler Kowal and Ian Kowal drew walks.
Carson Zinnecker’s fielder’s choice scored DeLong, a walk to Carson Campbell scored Tyler Kowal, and a groundout by Carter DeLong scored Ian Kowal.
Tyler Kowal was 2 for 3 and Zinnecker 2 for 4 for the Hilltoppers. Zinnecker also doubled for Onalaska, which had seven players drive in one run each and drew seven walks.
Waunakee 4, Central 1
WAUNAKEE — The 10th-seeded RiverHawks (10-14) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and were knocked out of the bracket by the seventh-seeded Warriors.
Shortstop Aiden Schulze singled for Central’s only hit, and he recorded two of the RiverHawks’ six stolen bases. Center fielder Landon Smith also swiped two.
Liam Branson pitched for Central and allowed four earned runs on three walks and seven hits while striking out two.
Schulze’s single came with one out in the third inning.
DIVISION 3
Durand-Arkansaw 4, Melrose-Mindoro 1
DURAND — The fifth-seeded Mustangs had their season ended by the fourth-seeded Bulldogs.
The game was scoreless until Durand-Arkansaw scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Melrose-Mindoro (14-6) countered with one in the top of the seventh but could get no more.
Shortstop/pitcher Jacob Thesing doubled and knocked in right fielder Isaiah Kleinsmith for the Mustangs’ run.
