REEDSBURG — The eighth-ranked Onalaska High School boys golf team came up 14 strokes short of advancing from a power-packed WIAA Division 1 sectional to the state tournament on Tuesday.
The Hilltoppers carded a team score of 312 but finished behind top-ranked Middleton and sixth-ranked Waunakee — both shot 298s — at the Reedsburg Country Club.
Onalaska was fourth behind third-place and third-ranked Madison West (306).
The top two teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced from the sectional.
The Hilltoppers nearly had an individual earn a spot in the state field, but sophomore Rylan Tomashek was ousted from a three-way playoff for the final spot on the third playoff hole.
Tomashek shot a 3-over-par 75, and that was good for a piece of sixth place behind Middleton senior Luke Weiss, whose even-par 72 made him medalist.
Tomashek was even on the back nine and played the front nine at 3 over. He birdied Nos. 7, 8, 14 and 16 and met par on seven other holes.
Junior Chasen Witt shot a 76 with birdies at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7 and was part of a 12th-place tie to back up Tomashek’s score for Onalaska.
Sophomore Colten Schroeder added an 80 and junior Grayson Andel an 81 for the Hilltoppers.
Holmen placed seventh with a 324 and was led by senior Logan Pinnow and junior Gavin Steffen, who were part of a tie for 19th place individually at 79.
Pinnow was 2 over on the front nine with a birdie on No. 5, and Steffen was 3 over on the front nine with a birdie at No. 8.
Seniors Braylan Welch and Ayden Dirks shot 83s to complete the Vikings’ scorecard. Welch carded a birdie on No. 1.
Junior Sid Hooyman shot an 81 and finished in a tie for 28th place. Hooyman was 4 over on the front and 5 over on the back with birdies at No. 2 and No. 4.
