CHIPPEWA FALLS — The Holmen High School softball team couldn’t bounce back from allowing two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and dropped a 5-2 decision to Chippewa Falls in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal on Tuesday.
The third-seeded Vikings (18-9) never led the second-seeded Cardinals (19-8), who will play fifth-seeded Marshfield for the sectional championship.
Holmen was shut out until scoring once in the top of the fifth and once again in the sixth.
Shortstop Macy Kline tied the game at 1 when she grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Makenna McHugh from third base. McHugh was running for Whitney Stuhr, who reached on an error to lead off the fifth.
Sydney Cichosz had the Vikings within 3-2 when she hit a two-out solo home run to left field in the sixth, but Chippewa Falls countered with its two-run sixth.
Cichosz was 2 for 3 with the run and RBI, and Kline was 1 for 4 with the RBI and one stolen base for an offense that struck out 10 times and did not draw a walk.
Stuhr pitched a complete game and finished with one strikeout. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and four walks.
DIVISION 2
Baldwin-Woodville 4, West Salem 0
BALDWIN — The third-seeded Panthers (21-4) couldn’t get anything going in a loss to the top-seeded Hawks (22-0).
West Salem was held to two hits — both singles — made two errors.
Senior pitcher Josie Brudos led off the game with a single to right field, but she was thrown out on an attempted steal of second base.
Freshman shortstop Parker Powell then led off the second with a single to right. An error put two runners on, but the next two batters were retired to end the threat.
The final 10 Panthers were retired in order.
Brudos, a Winona State commit, struck out four, walked two and allowed nine hits and three earned runs.
