SPARTA — The Aquinas High School baseball team maintained its share of first place in the MVC with a three-hit shutout of Sparta on Thursday.
Senior Aedan David shut the Spartans down with six strikeouts and didn’t allow an extra-base hit as the Blugolds (11-4, 8-2 MVC) won their second game in a row and remained in a first-place tie with Holmen after a 7-0 victory.
Center fielder Ryan Johnson was 2 for 2 with a double and a stolen base. He also scored once and drove in a run as Aquinas scored twice in the first inning, twice in the second and three times in the fourth.
Third baseman Waylon Hargrove singled, walked, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Holmen 9, Logan 1
HOLMEN — The Vikings (14-5, 8-2 MVC) kept their share of first place with a six-run third inning that triggered a 10th straight win.
Catcher Noah Carlson was 3 for 4, doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Vikings, who had 10 hits.
Right fielder Joe Meeter was 2 for 3, scored twice and stole two bases, while designated hitter Jason Bramwell went 2 for 4, drove in a run and scored once.
Bennett Schild pitched six innings, had eight strikeouts, walked four and allowed three hits and one unearned run.
Catcher Tommy Check, infielder Jackson Bosch and pitcher/third baseman Owen Check singled for Logan (11-8, 2-8).
Onalaska 4, Central 3 (8)
ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (9-8, 6-6 MVC) scored all of their runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to beat the visiting RiverHawks (10-8, 6-4).
Left fielder Bradyn DeLong started the eighth-inning rally with a one-out single, and center fielder Tyler Kowal followed that with a single to left field. An error at second base, however, allowed DeLong to advance from third and break the 3-3 tie.
Designated hitter/pitcher Carson Zinnecker tied the game in the seventh with a two-run triple.
Kowal was 3 for 4 for Onalaska, and Central had five players with one single apiece.
First baseman Sam Biegen, infielder Liam Branson and second baseman Jake Larson all had an RBI for the RiverHawks.
Arcadia 6, Luther 4
ARCADIA — The Knights (3-13, 3-7 Coulee) yielded five runs in the fifth and sixth innings of a loss to the Raiders.
Pitcher/shortstop Calvin Rick was 3 for 4 with three doubles and one RBI for Luther, which scored once in the top of the seventh. First baseman Max Lorenz and designated hitter Asher Lemke were both 2 for 3.
Tomah 5, West Salem 3
TOMAH — The Panthers (5-10) led 2-1 before the Timberwolves scored twice in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Designated hitter Luke Grube was 2 for 3 with a double and a run driven in, and catcher Greyson Garbers went 2 for West Salem.
First baseman Terryn Boland also hit a double for the Panthers.
Eleva-Strum 14, Melrose-Mindoro 12 (10)
MELROSE — The Mustangs (12-3) put two runners on in the bottom of the 10th inning but couldn’t score.
Right fielder Brady Blaken hit a grand slam, and Melrose-Mindoro finished with 15 hits and scored six runs in the bottom of the seven to force extra innings. Blaken’s grand slam tied the game in the seventh.
Third baseman Eric Herzberg was 3 for 5 with a double and drove in two runs, and center fielder Brett Peterson was 3 for 7 with an RBI.
First baseman Lane Rhyne went 2 for 6 with a double and scored twice.
