Thursday softball: Holmen keeps pressure on first-place Tomah with win over Central, and Augedahl pitches one-hitter for Caledonia

LA CROSSE — The Holmen High School softball team kept alive its hopes for a conference championship on Thursday by handing Central a 12-4 defeat at State Road.

The Vikings (13-7, 9-2 MVC) are a half-game behind first-place Tomah and have one game left against Sparta. The Timberwolves are 9-1 in conference games and play Central twice next week.

Catcher Avalee Euler was 3 for 3 with a home run as Holmen kept runners on the bases with 16 hits. Shortstop Macy Kline was 2 for 5 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and two runs driven in.

First baseman Kaylee Mosser went 2 for 5 with a double and drove in three runs, and freshman Whitney Stuhr was 2 for 4 with a double and drove in two runs.

Third baseman Kaitlyn Weiss also had two hits for the Vikings. Gabi Stuhr also doubled and pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, one walk and eight hits allowed.

Third baseman Addie Lenz drove in two runs for the RiverHawks (5-15, 3-7), and center fielder Elena Wagner and shortstop Ellie Gillitzer had two hits each. First baseman Norah Holkup doubled.

Caledonia 10, Rushford-Peterson 0 (6)

CALEDONIA — Junior Avery Augedahl pitched a one-hit shutout that featured 15 strikeouts as the Warriors (21-1) won their 17th game in a row.

First baseman Elsa Blum was 3 for 4 with a double and her second home run of the season. She drove in three runs and scored three times.

Third baseman Paizley Lange went 3 for 4 with two runs driven in and two scored, and Augedahl was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs driven in.

Left fielder Brairy Proulx also doubled for Caledonia and finished 2 for 2 with one RBI.

Tomah 4, Onalaska 0

ONALASKA — The Timberwolves grabbed the inside track to the MVC championship by blanking the Hilltoppers (13-9, 9-3) at Jaycee Fields.

Tomah (15-4, 9-1) can win the championship outright be beating Central twice next week.

Onalaska managed just two hits against University of Wisconsin commit Anna Wall, who made two runs in the first inning and two more in the second stand up for the victory.

Catcher Claire Wiegel singled to put two runners on in the third, and MJ Heit singled to lead off the seventh for the Hilltoppers. Wiegel’s single also moved Zoe Koonce-O’Kane to third after she reached on a dropped third strike and advanced on a sacrifice, but the Timberwolves ended the inning with a double play.

Eleva-Strum 7, Melrose-Mindoro 3

MELROSE — The Mustangs (14-4) allowed the Cardinals to turn a one-run lead into five with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Ellie Sawyer was 2 for 3, and shortstop Cooper Zeman went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one driven in for Melrose-Mindoro, which tied the game at 2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sparta 5, Logan 0

SPARTA — The Rangers (8-12, 2-9) were shut out by the Spartans on just six hits.

Third baseman Kenna Streeck was 2 for 3 with a walk and a triple, and first baseman Claire Schmitz singled and walked for Logan, which allowed two unearned runs.

Arcadia 16, Luther 0 (4)

ARCADIA — The Knights (2-9 Coulee) were the victims of a no-hitter by Layna Wozney, who struck out nine and walked three.
