LA CROSSE — Aquinas High School senior Waylon Hargrove finished a two-hit shutout on a strikeout with a runner at third base as the Blugolds beat Central 2-0 at Lee Gilbert Field on Monday.
Hargrove struck out six batter, walked four and allowed two singles as first-place Aquinas (9-2, 6-1 MVC) beat the RiverHawks (8-5, 4-3) for their fifth victory in a row.
The Blugolds scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hargrove and Marcus Klar both reached via walk and stole third and second base tp put two runners in scoring position for Landon Teachout.
Teachout hit a ground ball that turned into an error that allowed both runners to score.
Beckett Allert singled in the fourth inning, and Liam Branson singled in the fifth for Central’s hits.
A sacrifice bunt by Drew Ehler-Blum gave the RiverHawks runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but Hargrove escaped with a groundout.
Branson also pitched a two-hitter for Central> He struck out five and walked four.
Aquinas left fielder Eddie Berendes hit a double for the only extra-base hit of the game.
Holmen 2, Tomah 1 (8)
HOLMEN — The Vikings (4-2 MVC) beat the Timberwolves when Nolan Mashak singled home Landen Kelly with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Tomah tied the game at 1 with a run in the top of the fourth after right fielder Joe Meeter drilled a solo home run for Holmen in the bottom of the first.
Meeter was 2 for 3 and added a one-out triple in the sixth before being stranded there on two strikeouts.
Alex Goryl pitched a complete game for the Vikings and finished with seven strikeouts, six hits allowed and one walk.
Onalaska 7, Sparta 0
ONALASKA — Carson Campbell and Ian Kowal combined on a three-hit shutout for the Hilltoppers (6-6, 4-4 MVC) against the visiting Spartans.
Onalaska scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to pull away. Campbell pitched five innings, struck out seven, walked four and allowed two hits.
Campbell also doubled and drove in two runs for Onalaska, which received a 2-for-3 performance from catcher Hunter Morse.
Designated hitter Carson Zinnecker had a stolen base and drove in a run for the Hilltoppers.
Logan 8, Altoona 3
ALTOONA — The Rangers (6-6) moved their record back to .500 by scoring all of their runs in the first four innings.
Catcher Tommy Check was 2 for 4 with two doubles, two runs driven in and three runs scored for Logan, which had 10 hits.
Center fielder Sam Diehl was 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice. He also drove in a run and stole a base. Third baseman Owen Check was also 2 for 4 for Logan, which received a complete-game five-hitter from Jackson Bosch with four strikeouts and no walks.
G-E-T 6, West Salem 5
GALESVILLE — The Red Hawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the visiting Panthers (5-6, 5-4 Coulee).
Pitcher/third baseman Will Schmidt was 2 for 3 and first baseman Terryn Boland 2 for 4 with a stolen bases for West Salem, which led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the top of the fourth before G-E-T got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Luke Grube doubled and drove in a run for the Panthers. Shortstop Mekebo Anderson also walked twice and drove in a run.
Viroqua 6, Luther 0
ONALASKA — The Knights (3-8, 3-4 Coulee) were held to four hits and allowed three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh.
Ashton Kendall, Cal Lyga, Max Lorenz and Jonny Holub all singled for Luther.
