Saturday baseball: Holmen, Logan win twice while traveling for triangulars

SCHOFIELD — The Holmen High School baseball team celebrated taking over first place in the MVC by winning two games at a triangular hosted by D.C. Everest on Saturday.

The Vikings (11-5) extended their winning streak to seven games with an 11-6 win over D.C. Everest and a 10-6 victory over Superior.

Holmen scored six runs in the second inning to take control of the game against the Evergreens.

The middle of the infield — second baseman Nolan Lomas and shortstop Nolan Mashak — combined to reach safely six times and drive in six runs. Lomas was 3 for 5 and drove in three runs, and Mashak tripled, walked twice, sole a base and drove in three runs.

First baseman Maddax Connely and left fielder Riley Weisbecker both had two hits — Weisbecker doubled — and catcher Brock Needham doubled and drove in two runs.

The Vikings trailed the Spartans 6-3 before scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Lomas doubled and drove in three runs, and center fielder Mason Flury tripled and drove in three runs for Holmen. Right fielder Joe Meeter was also 2 for 3, stole two bases and scored twice.

Logan 12, Adams-Friendship 1 (5)

ADAMS — The Rangers (10-6) turned 22 hits into 30 runs and two nonconference wins at a triangular hosted by Adams-Friendship.

Outfielder Preston Elston and pitcher/third baseman Owen Check both singled, doubled and drove in four runs in the shutout victory to open the day. First baseman Preston Kromke drove in two runs, and left fielder Charlie Zellner had two hits for Logan.

Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter, and Check pitched three innings with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Center fielder Sam Diehl was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs driven in, catcher Jackson Bosch went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs driven in, and shortstop Tommy Check drove in two runs as the Rangers pushed their winning streak to five games.

Hank Bosch also had two hits and pitched four innings for Logan. He struck out eight, allowed four hits and walked one.

Melrose-Mindoro 16, Cashton 3 (6)

CASHTON — The Mustangs (11-2) ended the game with five runs in the top of the sixth, and center fielder Brett Peterson and first baseman Lane Rhyme combined to drive in 11 runs.

Melrose-Mindoro had 22 hits, and Peterson went 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and seven runs driven in. Rhyme drove in four while going 4 for 5 with a home run.

Left fielder/pitcher Wade Adams was 4 for 5 with a stolen base and drove in three runs, and second baseman Layne Fry was 4 for 4. Catcher Brewer Schlifer was 4 for 5, doubled twice and drove in two runs.

Viroqua 8, Aquinas 4

VIROQUA — The Blugolds (9-4) allowed four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth despite allowing just five hits in the game.

Aquinas made three errors, and those mistakes led to three unearned runs.

First baseman Aedan David was 3 for 4 with a double, catcher Ryan Johnson went 2 for 4 with a stolen base and one run driven in, and the Blugolds finished with 10 hits.
