Thursday baseball: Mustangs win on no-hitter, Aquinas and Central win by shutout

MELROSE — Jayce Stetzer and Brett Peterson combined on a no-hitter to help the Melrose-Mindoro High School baseball team knock off visiting Augusta 7-0 in a Dairyland Conference game on Thursday.

Stetzer pitched the first 6 2/3 innings and finished with 11 strikeouts and four walks before Peterson got the final out on a strikeout.

The Mustangs (7-1), who are ranked fourth in Division 3 by state coaches, bounced back from a loss to Division 4 state-ranked Eau Claire Immanuel and broke open this game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Peterson tripled with the bases loaded to plate all of those runs.

Stetzer scored twice and stole four bases, and Peterson and Colton Koss added two stolen bases each for Melrose-Mindoro.

Aquinas 1, Logan 0

LA CROSSE — Shortstop Marcus Klar delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Waylon Hargrove in the bottom of the first inning, and the first-place Blugolds (7-2, 5-1 MVC) made that stand up for a win over the Rangers (5-6, 2-6) at Lee Gilbert Field.

Aedan David pitched six shutout innings with eight strikeouts, three walks and four hits allowed, and teammate Landon Teachout pitched a scoreless seventh for Aquinas.

Owen Check pitched a complete game for Logan and struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits.

Center fielder Sam Diehl had three of Logan’s hits, including a double. The Rangers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, but David got the last out on a pop fly.

Central 5, Sparta 0

SPARTA — Kenden Bishofsky pitched a three-hitter to get the RiverHawks (8-2, 4-2 MVC) some revenge for an extra-inning loss to the Spartans on Tuesday.

Bishofsky struck out six and walked for in a complete game for Central.

Designated hitter Jordan Candahl was 2 for 4, doubled and drove in two runs for the RiverHawks, who scored twice in the first inning and once in each of the final three.

Catcher Charlie Buxton, first baseman Sam Biegen and right fielder Beckett Allert also had two hits for Central. Biegen added a double and Allert a stolen base.

Onalaska 8, Tomah 1

TOMAH — The Hilltoppers (5-4, 3-4 MVC) won their second straight game and avenged a loss to the Timberwolves on Monday.

Onalaska scored three times in the third inning and twice in the fifth to build its lead.

Catcher Hunter Morse was 2 for 3 and drove in four runs for the Hilltoppers, who also received two hits and two stolen bases from third baseman Carter DeLong and center fielder Tyler Kowal.

Jagger Banasik pitched a complete game and struck out three and walked three in limiting Tomah to four hits.

First baseman Ian Kowal and left fielder Bradyn DeLong were both 2 for 3, and right fielder Carson Campbell was 2 for 4. Designated hitter Carson Zinnecker doubled and recorded a stolen base.

West Salem 8, Viroqua 2

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (5-4, 5-3 Coulee) scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break away from a 1-1 tie with the visiting Blackhawks.

Third baseman Will Schmidt was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and pitcher Kayden Dettmering went 2 for 3 while striking out three and allowing two hits over six innings.

Second baseman Ayden Hillyer and center fielder Berkley Brose each drove in two runs for West Salem, which had 10 hits and won its second game in a row.

Lewiston-Altura 4, Caledonia 2

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (7-4) allowed four runs in the top of the first inning and never recovered against the Cardinals.

Caledonia was held to three hits, but pitcher/first baseman Max Schmitz had two of them. One of those hits was a double, and he drove in a run.

Shortstop Tyler Ginther also doubled for the Warriors.

Westby 7, Luther 0
Westby 3, Luther 1

WESTBY — The Knights (3-7, 3-3 Coulee) were held to three hits in the opener and allowed all the Norsemen to score all of their runs during the fifth inning of the second game.

Left fielder Michael Johnson drove in second baseman Cal Lyga in the top of the seventh inning to help Luther avoid a double shutout.

Calvin Rick pitched the second game and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four.

Caleb Mielke doubled in the first game for Luther’s lone extra-base hit.
