CALEDONIA — The Caledonia High School baseball team was sent to the elimination bracket of the MSHSL Section 1AA tournament on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded Warriors couldn’t overcome a two-run fourth inning by fifth-seeded Pine Island and dropped a 2-1 decision that will force them to win out in order to advance.
Caledonia (15-9) will play ninth-seeded P-E-M at Rochester Hudson Field on Monday in an elimination game. A win there gets it a Tuesday game.
The Warriors had five hits and put two runners on via error, but they could only manage one run in the sixth inning.
Second baseman/pitcher Landon O’Heron singled home first baseman/right fielder Max Schmitz with that run, but Pine Island got out for that on a fly ball with runners on first and third for the third out.
The Warriors put runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh — Chase Hauser singled, Cooper Allen reached on an error, and Jacob Klug hit into a fielder’s choice — but a groundout ended the game.
O’Heron finished 2 for 3 with the RBI, and Max Schmitz and Jack Schmitz each recorded a stolen base.
O’Heron and Jack Schmitz pitched and combined to limit Pine Island to three hits. Schmitz struck out four, walked three and allowed one hit over four innings, and O’Heron struck out one and allowed two hits over three.
Schmitz allowed both runs, but only one was earned as the second scored on a passed ball.
