Tuesday girls soccer: Holmen shuts out Sparta; West Salem and Central draw

HOLMEN — The Holmen High School girls soccer team continued its unbeaten MVC season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Sparta on Tuesday.

The first-place Vikings (5-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 conference), who are ranked ninth in Division 2 by state coaches this week, bombarded the Spartans with 42 shots.

Holmen scored for the first time when sophomore Layni Wood converted a corner kick by junior Lydia Sader with a header in the fifth minute.

The Vikings scored the final four goals in the second half.

Sader scored one with an assist from senior Morgan Potaracke, sophomore Paige Olson scored one unassisted, and Sader scored a second goal with an assist from sophomore Saige Ratajski in the 76th minute.

There was also a Sparta own goal in the second half.

Central 2, West Salem 2

WEST SALEM — The RiverHawks (5-1-1, 1-1-1 MVC) scored twice in the first half, and the Panthers (1-3-2, 0-1-2) scored once in each half.

Ava Schuster scored unassisted in the first half, and assisted on a goal by Amelia Karr in the second half for West Salem.

Senior Grace Wilkerson had one goal and one assist for Central. She scored with an assist from Mae Yang for the RiverHawks’ first goal and assisted on a score for Ellia Dale.

Wilkerson has scored 13 goals this season.
