MVC boys golf: Onalaska wins MVC championship with Witt as medalist

VIROQUA — The Onalaska High School boys golf team completed a dominant run through the MVC season by winning the championship meet at Viroqua Hills Golf Course on Monday.

The Hilltoppers, who are ranked sixth in Division 1 by state coaches, had all of their scoring players finish in a tie for sixth place or better and put together a team score of 306.

Onalaska finished eight shots ahead of runner-up Sparta (314) and 19 ahead of third-place Aquinas (325). Holmen was fourth (331) and Central/Logan fifth (355).

Junior Chasen Witt shot a 2-over-par 73 and finished three shots ahead of sophomore teammate Rylan Tomashek in the battle for meet medalist. Tomashek’s 76 was one shot better than a third-place tie at 77 that included Aquinas sophomore James Siegert.

Witt shot 2 over on the front nine and even on the back. He posted four birdies, beating par at No. 2, No. 6, No. 11 and No. 14,

Tomahsek’s round was highlighted by three birdies while he played even on the back nine. Tomasheks birdies Nos. 10, 11 and 18 for his 34.

Siegert was 2 over on the front with a birdie at No. 2.

The Hilltoppers also received a fifth place from sophomore Colten Schroeder (78) and freshman Asher Andel’s share of sixth place at 79.

Schroeder’s best stretch was the back nine, which he finished at 2 over with a birdie at No. 11. Andel 2 over on the back.

The Blugolds, who are ranked seventh in Division 2, had juniors Jack Vogel and Gabe Hundt tied for 12th at 82 and junior Michael Jones in 15th place at 84.

Holmen was led by seniors Logan Pinnow and Ayden Dirks, who were part of the sixth-place tie at 79. Pinnow shot 3 over on the front and finished with birdies at No. 4, No. 11 and No. 14, while Dirks shot 3 over on the back nine.

Senior Sawyer Genz and senior Braylan Welch also scored for the Vikings with respective rounds of 86 and 87.

Central/Logan was led by junior Sid Hooyman and sophomore Sam Hansen, who were part of a tie for 15th place with 84s. Senior Tyler Sirianni shot a 91 and freshman Nate Brudos and junior Ryder Rusk 96s.
