Tuesday track and field: Schmidt wins throws and Holmen girls dominate Onalaska Invitational

ONALASKA — The Holmen High School girls track and field team won the eight-team Onalaska Invitational on Tuesday in dominant fashion.

The Vikings accumulated 218 points to finish well ahead of second-place Mauston (77) and third-place Wisconsin Rapids (72).

Holmen’s boys put together 111 points and finished tied with Wisconsin Rapids for second behind Mauston’s 138.

Onalaska’s girls were fourth (68), Central’s fifth (61). Aquinas seventh (49) and Logan eighth (2).

Onalaska’s boys were fourth (80), Central’s fifth (76) and Aquinas and Logan tied for seventh (13).

Holmen senior Brenna Schmidt was a double winner and led local competitors with victories in the discus (133 feet, 2 inches) and shot put (30-10 1/2).

Holmen’s girls also received victories from freshman Ava Newman (100 meters, 12.86 seconds), senior Alivia Wickstrom (100 hurdles, 15.64), senior Sabrina Lechnir (800, 2:18.06), junior Kaila Casberg (long jump, 16-9 1/2) and sophomore Aubrey Hauser (triple jump, 33-9 1/2).

Holmen’s boys had champions in junior Jakai Ayed (100, 11.06), senior Ethan Swaney (110 hurdles, 16.17) and senior Kyle Dreyer (discus, 149-4).

Onalaska juniors Brendan Chenault and Gabe Mauss competed and won the 200 (22.39) and long jump (22-9), respectively.

Central’s boys won the 800 relay (1:36.39), and Aquinas junior Caitlin Wengel (1,600, 5:48.07) and Central sophomore Maren Heckman (300 hurdles, 51.69) won events.
