LA CROSSE — Junior Waylon Hargrove and sophomore Landon Teachout combined on a one-hitter as the Aquinas High School baseball team opened its season with an 11-1 five-inning nonconference victory over Eau Claire Regis at Lee Gilbert Field on Thursday.
Hargrove pitched three hitless innings and struck out six while walking one. Teachout struck out one and walked one over the final two innings.
Teachout also doubled twice while going 3 for 3 and drove in two runs. Sophomore shortstop was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Brayden Young and Cullen Sackman each scored twice for the Blugolds, who had a six-run fourth inning to pull away.
Hargrove had two of his team’s six stolen bases, and Young hit a double for Aquinas, which won last year’s WIAA Division 3 state championship and moves up to Division 2 this spring.
Holmen 4, Eau Claire North 2
HOLMEN — The Vikings beat the Huskies, who won a Division 1 regional championship and won 15 games last spring.
Right fielder Joe Meeter doubled and scored in the first and was hit by a pitch and scored in the fifth for Holmen, which took a 2-0 lead when first baseman Abe Henderson doubled home Metter and left fielder Alex Goryl. Goryl brought home a run with a fly ball in the second, and catcher Braeden Linse doubled home Meeter in the fifth.
Paul Goryl struck out 10 without walking a batter and scattered seven hits over six innings.
Logan 6, G-E-T 5
GALESVILLE — The Rangers used a three-run top of the fifth inning to get enough offense to beat the Red Hawks.
Designated hitter Parker Lycke and shortstop Bradley Check each drove in two runs for Logan, which overcame G-E-T’s four-run bottom of the first.
Left fielder James Gruen was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and a stolen base, and catcher Tommy Check and third baseman/pitcher Jackson Bosch drove in a run apiece for the Rangers, who used three pitchers — Owen Check, Bosch and Preston Elston — and allowed one earned run.
Bangor 6, Luther 3
BANGOR — The Cardinals had 12 hits to the visiting Knights’ three.
Luther scored one run in the third inning and two more in the sixth.
Center fielder Gabe Shepard was 2 for 3 with a double, left fielder Ashton Kendall added a single, and pitcher/shortstop Jackson Kendall drove in a run for Luther, which tied the game at in the top of the third but gave up four runs in the bottom of the third.
Logan Pierce stole two bases for the Knights.
Sparta 6, West Salem 4
WEST SALEM — The Panthers scored twice in the second inning and twice in the sixth.
Third baseman Terryn Boland, catcher Will Schmidt and outfielder Max Diegmann were all 2 for 3, and Schmidt, Diegmann and Nate Stefferud drove in one run each for West Salem. Schmidt doubled, and Boland and Rory O’Neill each stole two bases for the Panthers, who never led after allowing three runs in the top of the first inning.
Three West Salem pitchers combined to walk 11 batters and allow six earned runs.
