WIAA baseball: West Salem, Luther eliminated in regional quarterfinals

MERRILL — The ninth-seeded West Salem High School baseball team was eliminated from the WIAA Division 2 postseason bracket with a 2-0 loss at eighth-seeded Merrill on Thursday.

Bennett Rieber and Terryn Boland allowed just two hits over six innings — Rieber pitched 5 2/3 — but the Bluejays managed to score one run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth in the regional quarterfinal matchup.

A two-out wild pitch allowed the fifth-inning run to score, and an error led to a Merrill run in the sixth.

Luke Grube singled and walked to reach safely twice for West Salem (9-13), which entered the game with two straight victories.
