Monday baseball: Rangers score two in seventh to beat Hilltoppers; Luther, Central both win conference openers

LA CROSSE — The Logan High School baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand visiting Onalaska a 4-3 MVC loss on Monday.

The Hilltoppers (1-3, 0-3 MVC), who have lost three conference games by a total of five runs, scored once in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Shortstop Cooper Rudie led off the top of the seventh by drawing a walk and went to third on a groundout. Pitcher/first baseman Ian Kowal then singled him home to give Onalaska a 3-2 lead,

The Rangers (2-2, 1-2) drew two walks to open the bottom of the seventh. Preston Elston then bunted and reached on an error that allowed center fielder Sam Diehl to score and tie the game.

An intentional walk loaded the bases before shortstop Hank Bosch hit a fly ball to left field, and catcher Jackson Bosch scored when it was mishandled for an error.

Logan made the most out of four hits, but third baseman Owen Check doubled, and Diehl had two stolen bases.

Kowal was 2 for 3, and pitcher Carson Campbell doubled for the Hilltoppers.

Luther 5, West Salem 1

ONALASKA — The Knights (1-3, 1-0 Coulee) won their first conference game of the season after opening with three nonconference losses.

Luther scored twice in the first inning, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth while Cal Lyga held the Panthers (2-2, 2-1) to three hits and a lone run in the top of the sixth.

Shortstop Calvin Rick was 2 for 2 with a double, walked twice, scored once and stole two bases for Luther, which finished with 11 hits.

First baseman Max Lorenz, Lyga and catcher Asher Lemke all had two hits for the Knights. Lemke hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to push Luther’s lead to 4-0.

Lyga struck out four and walked two in a complete game.

Will Schmidt struck out eight, walked two and allowed four runs on nine hits for the Panthers.

Shortstop/center fielder Mekebo Anderson drove in right fielder Landon Rieber for West Salem’s run. Rieber had reached on a single.

Central 6, Tomah 3

TOMAH — The RiverHawks (2-0, 1-0 MVC) won their conference opener by scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning and three times in the top of the seventh.

Central broke a 3-3 tie with three hots, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly and an error in the seventh.

Pitcher Liam Branson had a run-scoring single to plate shortstop Aiden Schulze before a double by right fielder Kenden Bishofsky. Catcher Charlie Buxton followed with a sacrifice fly to score Branson, and Bishofsky scored when a grounder off the bat of first baseman Sam Blegen turned into an error.

Schulze was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, Bishofsky 2 for 3 with two runs scored and third baseman Beckett Allert drove in two runs for the RiverHawks.

Branson pitched a complete game and finished with four strikeouts, one walk and three hits allowed.
