Thursday track and field report: Onalaska’s McGarry, Luther’s Schmeling have big days at UW-Stout

MENOMONIE — Onalaska High School junior Makena McGarry had the biggest day for local athletes at the Stout Elite track and field meet hosted by UW-Stout on Thursday.

McGarry won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 10.5 inches and added third- and fourth-place finishes in the triple jump and 400, respectively. McGarry went 35-5.5 in the triple and was timed at 1:02.72 in the 400.

Luther senior Jack Schmeling also a trio of top finishes to lead local boys. Schmeling was second in the shot put (51-8), third in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the triple jump (41-2.75).

Three others joined McGarry as a champion at the meet.

Holmen’s Lydia Lazarescu won the 55-meter dash in 7.16, and Luther’s Lauren Wickus the high jump at 5-1. Aquinas’ Declan Gregg also won the boys 1,600 in 4:26.8.

Holmen’s Brenna Schmidt was second in the shot put (39-9) while teammates Kendall Kozlowski and Abry Bloyer were third in the pole vault (9-6) and 55 (7.46), respectively.

Onalaska’s Isabela Gutierrez was also third in the 400 (1:01.99).

Earning fourth place were Holmen’s Sophia Jacobson in the high jump (4-0), Luther’s Jacee Erickson in the pole vault (9-6) and Onalaska’s Ella Stevens in the triple jump (34-6).

Aquinas’ Emily Bagniefski (3,200,12:19.53), Holmen’s Ryland Eickhoff (55, 6.66) and Onalaska’s Brendan Chenault (400, 53.77) all finished fifth.

Holmen’s girls placed fourth as a team with 37.5 points, and Onalaska (sixth, 36) and Luther (11th, 21) followed.

Luther was eighth (19.5) and Aquinas tied for ninth (18) in the boys team standings.
