WIAA girls soccer regionals: Central, Holmen, Aquinas win championship games and advance to sectionals

LA CROSSE — The Central High School girls soccer team found plenty of ways to score while winning a WIAA Division 2 regional championship game on Saturday.

The second-seeded RiverHawks (10-4-2) received four goals from senior Grace Wilkerson and pulled away from a 2-1 halftime lead to advance to a sectional semifinal on Thursday.

Central will play at top-seeded Sauk Prairie (10-2-5) for the right to play for a sectional championship next weekend.

Wilkerson scored with an assist from Mae Yang and followed it up by scoring with an assist from Pearl Court to give the RiverHawks a 2-0 lead just eight minutes into the game at Swanson Field.

Central also scored the first two goals of the second half — one minute apart — for a commanding lead.

Yang, Ellia Dale and Rozlyn Swenson also scored for Central, which is 4-0-1 in its past five games.

Wilkerson, who has 28 goals and 13 assists this season, assisted on Yang’s goal and scored her team’s fourth and seventh goals in the victory.

Cam Woyczik made one save in goal for the RiverHawks.

Holmen 1, New Richmond 0

GALESVILLE — The top-seeded Vikings (16-3-1) won their 10th game in a row, recorded their 15th shutout of the season and won their second regional championship in three years.

The Tigers (5-13-3) played a different attack than the one they used in a 2-1 loss to Holmen during the regular season, but the 5-3-2 formation didn’t help them score a goal.

The Vikings, who host second-seeded River Falls at G-E-T in a sectional semifinal on Thursday, broke the scoreless tie when sophomore Paige Olson scored in the 48th minute by taking advantage of one run on each side of her to open a hole in New Richmond’s back line.

The Tigers were held without a shot in the first half and lost for the 10th time in 12 games.

River Falls 5, Onalaska 2

RIVER FALLS — The third-seeded Hilltoppers (10-8-1) were knocked out of the tournament by the second-seeded Wildcats (14-5-1).

Onalaska had a 1-0 lead when sophomore Ellie Thesing converted an assist from senior Isabella Cromheecke in the 10th minute, but River Falls came back to score the next three goals for a 3-1 halftime lead.

Sophomore Avery Cowley had 18 saves in goal for the Hilltoppers as the Wildcats kept pressuring with the ball

Thesing scored again in the 47th minute with an assist from sophomore McKenna Alderman to get Onalaska within 3-2, but River Falls pulled away with goals in the 53rd and 74th minutes.

Division 3
Baldwin-Woodville 2, West Salem 2 (B-W wins shootout 2-0)

BALDWIN — The Panthers (7-5-4) lost a heartbreaker to the Blackhawks after ending their season in 2024 and 2025 postseason matchups.

Division 4
Aquinas 4, Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld 0

LA CROSSE — The top-seeded Blugolds (14-3) won a regional championship with a shutout at Fields for Kids.

Aquinas advances to host second-seeded Lodi in a sectional semifinal on Thursday after recording their ninth shutout of the season and second in a row. The Blugolds beat the Blue Devils 4-3 during the regular season.

Senior Alexa Myre scored two goals, and Anna Binsfeld and Morghan Gerling scored once each for the Blugolds. Myre and Hayden Zehren had one assist each.
