Holmen High School senior Lydia Lazarescu will get a chance to add to her collection of WIAA Division 1 state track and field championships after winning a couple of sprints and a relay race at the Verona Sectional on Friday.
Lazarescu won the 100-meter dash (11.85 seconds), 200 (24.34) and helped the Vikings cross the line first in the 400 relay (47.96) and will run all three races again during the state meet at UW-La Crosse on June 5-6.
Senior teammate and future UW-La Crosse teammate Abry Bloyer was second in both sprints with times of 11.87 and 24.99 and ran with the same 400 relay to become a three-event qualifier.
Lazarescu won the 100 and 200 as a sophomore, was second in both events as a junior and was third in the 100 and a 200 qualifier as a freshman. She will compete in her ninth, 10th and 11th state events next weekend. Bloyer also qualified in all three events as a junior.
Senior Alivia Wickstrom also won the 100 hurdles (15.12) and was third in the 300 hurdles (46.13) to qualify in both events, and senior Brenna Schmidt was runner-up in the shot put (38 feet, 1 inch) and discus (123-2) to help the Vikings score 114 points and win the sectional team championship.
Wickstrom qualified for state in both hurdle events as a junior, and Schmidt was second in the shot put and a discus qualifier last year.
Onalaska seniors Makena McGarry and Isabella Malecek and Holmen junior Jakai Ayed also have the chance to build on past state success after string sectionals.
McGarry won the triple jump (36-6 1/2), was second in the long jump (17-8) and ran with the winning 1,600 relay team, which was clocked at 3:58.33. McGarry has already participated at state in eight events, and she is trying medal for the third straight year in the long jump.
Malecek is a senior qualifier in the 400 (59.67), 1,600 relay and high jump (5-4) after competing in nine state events and been on the medal stand six times over the past three years.
Ayed won the 110 hurdles (14.33) and 300 hurdles (39.22) on Friday. He placed fifth in both events at state last year and is a three-time qualifier in the 110s.
Logan senior Maddy Cornett became a three-time qualifier in the Division 2 100 with a second-place finish and time of 12.71 in the 100, and Logan senior Andrew Stanton is a three-time qualifier in the 400 after his winning time of 49.55 at the sectional in Rice Lake.
