DODGE CENTER — The Caledonia/Spring Grove track and field team will have one boy and one girl at the MSHSL Class state meet after impressive Section 1 performances on Thursday.
Junior Coby Hammell, who committed to play football at the University of North Dakota over the weekend, is a qualifier in the 100-meter dash after placing second in the finals with a time of 11.01 seconds. He cut significant time from his run of 11.38 in the prelims.
Seventh-grader Finley Wait is also a state qualifier after a second-place finish in the girls 100. Wait ran a 13.12 in the prelim before cutting to a 12.7 in the finals.
Wait also just missed out on qualifying in the 200 when her third-place time of 26.33 in the finals missed out on the automatic qualifying standard of 26.13.
The MSHSL state meet will be held June 4-6 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The top two finishers in each event and anyone meeting the qualifying standard will compete at the state meet.
Wait was also sixth in the 400 (1:02.2), and junior teammate Jessica Stendel was sixth in the shot put (33 feet, 8 inches) and shot put (106-2).
Seth Kaufmann was ninth in the boys long jump (18-0.5).
