AUGUSTA — Junior Bristol Coats won three events to lead the way as the Melrose-Mindoro High School girls track and field team won the Dairyland Conference championship on Thursday.
Coats was victorious in the 100-meter dash, 200 and 300 hurdles and placed second in the long jump as the Mustangs used 131 points to finish comfortably ahead of second-place C-FC (95) and third-place Eleva-Strum (72).
Melrose-Mindoro’s boys were fourth with 69 points in a competition that was won by Whitehall (142).
Coats was timed at 13.13 seconds in the 100, 27.05 in the 200, 47.73 in the hurdles and had a long jump of 16 feet, 5 3/4 inches to place second to Lincoln’s Claire Skowronski (17-0 1/2).
The Mustangs also received big points from junior Sheila Johnson, who won the 400 om 1:02.22, was second to Coats in the 200 (28.05), second in the high jump (5-2) and ran with Melrose-Mindoro’s second-place 1,600 relay team (4:32.77).
Junior Payten Craig won the pole vault (8-6) and was also second to Coats in the 200 (13.63), third in the 200 (28.16) and ran with the Mustangs’ runner-up 800 relay team (1:55.56).
Melrose-Mindoro’s boys had their greatest success in relay events.
The Mustangs won the 800 (1:38.33) and 3,200 (8:55.1) and placed third in the 1,600 (3:44.31).
Junior Caden Arneson was third in the 3,200 (10:52.91), sophomore Izaak Christianson third in the pole vault (12-0_ and sophomore Arkaden Nielsen third in the 300 hurdles (47.79).
Arneson also ran with the 3,200 relay and Christianson and Nielsen with the 800 relay.
