Tuesday baseball: Onalaska, Holmen, Logan emerge with victories

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School baseball team used a five-run first inning to set the tone in an 11-4 nonconference victory at Luther on Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers (4-3) recorded three of their eight hits in the first and finished the game with 11 stolen bases.

Catcher Hunter Morse was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in three runs, while teammate and pitcher/infielder Carson Zinnecker went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs.

Carter DeLong, who pitched and played third base and center field, also drove in two runs and had one of his team’s stolen bases.

Carson Campbell, Cooper Rudie and Ian Kowal each stole two bases for the Hilltoppers, who led 9-1 after scoring once in the top of the sixth.

Zinnecker also pitched four scoreless innings. He struck out four, walked one and allowed two hits.

The Knights (3-5) had five players with one single each. Shortstop Calvin Rick, left fielder Michael Johnson and third baseman/pitcher Ian Ehlke each drove in a run.

Holmen 9, G-E-T 1

HOLMEN — The Vikings (5-5) got back to the .500 mark and ended a four-game losing streak by beating the visiting Red Hawks.

Five of Holmen’s 10 hits were doubles, and pitcher Alex Goryl struck out seven, walked four and allowed two hits and no earned runs over six innings.

The Vikings answered G-E-T’s run in the top of the first with four in the bottom of the inning and extended the lead from there.

First baseman Chris Holmes was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs driven in, and shortstop Nolan Mashak doubled and drove in two runs.

Center fielder Mason Flury was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Landen Kelly, Maddax Connely and Nolan Lomas all doubled for Holmen, which had six players successfully steal a base.

Logan 11, Richland Center 7

LA CROSSE — The Rangers (5-4) pushed their winning streak to three games by scoring three times in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to beat the visiting Hornets.

A five-run top of the fifth put Richland Center in front 6-5 before Logan put together the two big innings.

Right fielder/pitcher Preston Elston went 3 for 4 with a double and drove in four runs for the Rangers, who had 13 hits and six players with at least one run driven in.

First baseman Jesse Lycke hit a two-run home run in the second inning, and center fielder Sam Diehl doubled, stole two bases, drove in two runs and walked and scored three times.

Left fielder Charlie Zellner was 3 for 4, stole two bases and scored three runs for Logan, which took the lead for good on a two-run single by Elston in the fifth.

Jackson Bosch also had two hits for the Rangers in their third straight victory.

Sparta 3, Central 2 (9)

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (7-2, 3-2 MVC) held a 2-1 lead after three innings, but the Spartans came back to win in extra innings at Copeland Park.

Center fielder Landon Smith was 3 for 3, scored both runs, stole a base and hit a home run for Central.
Designated hitter Jordan Candahl went 2 for 4, and shortstop/pitcher Aiden Schulte doubled.

Schulze doubled home Smith in the first inning, and Smith hit a solo home run in the third. Liam Branson pitched 5 2/3 innings and finished with seven strikeouts, seven hits allowed and three walks.

Eau Claire Immanuel 4, Melrose-Mindoro 1

MELROSE — The Mustangs (7-1), who are ranked fourth in Division 3 by state coaches this week, lost for the first time this season.

The Lancers, who are ranked 10th in Division 4, held Melrose-Mindoro to our hits and scored twice in the top of the sixth to double their lead.

Right fielder Isaiah Kleinsmith went 2 for 3 with two triples and scored the lone run for the Mustangs. Designated hitter Wade Adams drove Kleinsmith in when he hit into a double play in the bottom of the seventh.
