MELROSE — The Melrose-Mindoro High School softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-4 nonconference victory over Westby on Friday.
The Mustangs (7-1) avoided a second consecutive loss with four straight hits after the first out was recorded in the seventh.
Pitcher Opal Buchanan’s bases-loaded double to left field scored shortstop Cooper Zeman, center fielder Kelsey Young and second baseman Bella Rozek and snatch a victory from the hands of the Norsemen.
After a strikeout to lead off the seventh, Zeman singled to Center field, Young to right and Rozek to left. Buchanan, who also singled twice during a 3-for-4 performance, finished the game on a 3-1 pitch.
Zeman was 2 for 4, tripled and scored twice, and Rozek was 2 for 4 with a double.
Buchanan also pitched a complete game and finished with nine strikeouts. She allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk.
