ONALASKA — The Holmen High School girls soccer team scored three times in the first half and snapped a six-game losing streak to rival and state-ranked Onalaska at the Onalaska athletic fields on Thursday.
The Vikings (8-6-1, 6-3) avoided defeat against the Hilltoppers for the first time since a tie late in the 2022 season with a 5-1 victory in an MVC season-ending tournament game they never trailed. Holmen also won its first game in the series since 2018.
Freshman Ava Rivera scored twice for Holmen, and Ava Amundson and Amelia Dewey also found the back of the net. Rivera scored the first goal of the game, and Dewey gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead when she answered almost immediately and Onalaska goal by Natalie Tevis that was assisted by Isabella Cromheecke.
Sophomore Moira Linse had 13 saves for Holmen, and Avery Cowley had four for the Hilltoppers (9-4-1, 6-2-1), who entered the game ranked ninth in Division 2 by state coaches.
West Salem 2, Central 1
WEST SALEM — The Panthers (11-2-1, 8-0-1) took down the state’s eighth-ranked Division 2 team in a game that was scoreless at the half.
Emily Graham and Addy Ferguson scored goals for West Salem, which has won five of its past six games. Ferguson also had the assist on Graham’s goal.
The RiverHawks (9-3-2, 5-3-1) avoided the shutout when Mae Yang converted a corner kick from Grace Wilkerson.
Aquinas 7, Logan/Luther 0
LA CROSSE — The Blugolds, who are ranked fifth in Division 3 by state coaches this week, recorded their ninth shutout of the season with a win at Fields for Kids.
Aquinas (11-3-2, 5-3-2) hasn’t allowed a goal since May 10 and has shut out five straight opponents.
Freshman Anna Binsfeld scored three times for the Blugolds, who also received two goals from junior Alexa Myre and one each from junior Molly Swift and freshman Hannah Miller.
Myre and junior Hayden Zehren both recorded two assists, and Miller added one of her own.
The Rangers (6-10-1, 2-8-1) put three of their five shots on goal.
