ARCADIA — The Arcadia High School softball team trailed first-place G-E-T by seven runs when it took its turn to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday.
The Raiders needed rally because a defeat would drop them three games behind the Red Hawks in the loss column with two Coulee Conference games remaining on the schedule.
Arcadia didn’t assure itself of anything in terms of a title chance, but it certainly came through in crunch time to record an 8-7 victory that was won with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Junior Kiley Fitzpatrick brought home sophomore Chloe Schlosstein after Schlosstein singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sacia Boland in the eighth of a game that included three errors on each side.
The Raiders (11-5, 8-2) scored four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth to hand G-E-T (11-3, 6-1) its first conference loss. Sophomore Layna Wozney pitched the final five innings in relief and finished with five strikeouts, two walks, three hits allowed and one run allowed.
Sophomore catcher Tatum Drazkowski led off the sixth and seventh with hits, and two G-E-T errors combined with a two-run double by Boland accounted for the four-run sixth.
Drazkowski’s seventh-inning hit was a double and followed by an RBI double from Wozney. Kaitlyn Bremer drove in Wozney with a single before stealing second and third base and tying the game when she raced home on a throwing error.
Drazkowski and Bremer were both 2 for 4, and Bremer had four stolen bases for Arcadia, which hosts Melrose-Mindoro on Tuesday and plays at G-E-T on Thursday.
Caledonia 20, Rochester Lourdes 4 (4)
CALEDONIA — The Warriors (12-1) used a nine-run first inning to take immediate control.
Caledonia had 16 hits and at least one from each spot in the batting order.
Pitcher Avery Augedahl was 3 for 3 with four RBIs and first baseman Elsa Blum 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs for the Warriors, who added six runs in the second inning and five in the third.
Catcher Adrienne Lange doubled and was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and second baseman Vivian Kittleson and center fielder Nora Staggemeyer both drove in two runs. Staggemeyer and third baseman Paizley Lange had two hits apiece.
Onalaska 8, Sparta 0
ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (10-3, 7-1) received no-hit pitching from Sydney Kraus and kept pressure on first-place Tomah (13-2, 7-0) with a game against the Timberwolves scheduled for Tuesday.
Onalaska pulled away from a two-run lead with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to shut out the Spartans for a second time. Kraus, a freshman, struck out 11 and walked one while pitching a complete game.
Kraus also hit a home run, went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and stole two bases for the Hilltoppers, who had 10 hits. Right fielder MJ Heit was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and an RBI, and shortstop Quita Olson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Melrose-Mindoro 8, Eau Claire Immanuel 1
EAU CLAIRE — The Mustangs (12-1, 8-1) scored four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to pull away for the victory.
Shortstop Cooper Zeman and pitcher Emma Severson each had three of Melrose-Mindoro’s 13 hits, and second baseman Bella Rozek slugged a home run.
Severson also struck out 11 and allowed one earned run on two-hit pitching. Six Mustangs drove in at least one run, and Severson knocked in two.
Melrose-Mindoro travels to Arcadia for a big nonconference game on Tuesday before returning to the Dairyland Conference and hosting Independence/Gilmanton on Thursday.
West Salem 4, Viroqua 1
WEST SALEM — The second-place Panthers (11-4, 7-1) needed a three-run fifth inning to get away from a 1-1 tie.
Senior catcher Megan Johnson was 2 for 3, and junior pitcher Josie Brudos struck out 11 batters and allowed one unearned run on five hits and two walks.
West Salem had six hits — all singles — and shortstop Madison Elsen added two hits in three plate appearances.
Onalaska Luther 4, Westby 3
WESTBY — The Knights (8-8, 3-5) won for the third time in four games with a run in the top of the seventh inning against the Norsemen.
Shortstop Rylee Weber started the winning rally with a two-out single, and second baseman Amanda Yonkovich followed with one of her own. Catcher Julia Sill then hit a grounder to shortstop, and Weber scored on an error
Weber and Yonkovich both went 2 for 4, and Addy Palubicki pitched a complete game for Luther. She struck out six, walked four and allowed six hits.
Weber and Sill both had two stolen bases, and first baseman Karly Miller doubled.
