Thursday softball: Brudos, Augedahl keep up with big seasons for West Salem and Caledonia

WEST SALEM — Senior Josie Brudos hit her 11th home run of the season and struck out 16 batters as the West Salem High School softball team beat visiting Viroqua 7-0 on Thursday.

The first-place Panthers (13-2, 9-1 Coulee Conference) scored five runs in the first three innings and had three in the second inning to pull away from the Blackhawks.

Brudos, who has scored 32 runs this season, scored twice against Viroqua and led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left field.

Right fielder Kylie Elsen and shortstop Madison Elsen also drove in one run each for West Salem, which has won four games in a row and nine straight conference games.

The 16 strikeouts pushes Brudos’ season total to 153, and the zero earned runs allowed lowered her ERA to 0.76.

CALEDONIA — Junior Avery Augedahl allowed five hits over 11 scoreless innings to lead the Warriors (14-1) to their ninth and 10th consecutive victories.

Augedahl shut out the Cardinals on two hits during a complete game in the opener and allowed three over four innings in the second game.

She also struck out 18 batters to run her season total to 143. The zero earned runs allowed lowered her season ERA to 0.54.

Augedahl and first baseman Elsa Blum were both 2 for 3 in the opener. Blum also drove in a run and stole two bases.

Center fielder Ashlyn Reinhart was 2 for 2 with a double and drove in two runs to go with a stolen base. Right fielder Nora Staggemeyer also doubled for the Warriors.

Third baseman Paizley Lange, Blum, Reinhart and right fielder/third baseman Lily Augedahl all had two hits for Caledonia in the second game. Blum doubled twice, stole a base and drove in two runs, and Reinhart doubled once and drove in four.

Holmen 11, Logan 0 (5)

HOLMEN — The second-place Vikings (8-4, 7-1 MVC) scored seven runs in the fourth inning, and Gabi Stuhr pitched a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks at Viking Elementary.

Shortstop Macy Kline was 3 for 4 with three singles, three stolen bases and three runs scored for Holmen, which won its third straight game and for the sixth time in its past seven.

The Vikings had 11 hits and the Rangers (6-6, 1-5) five errors that led to seven unearned runs.

Second baseman Makenzie Nunemacher was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and two runs driven in, and first baseman Kaylee Mosser went 2 for 3, stole four bases and scored twice. Center fielder Makenna McHugh also tripled and drove in two runs for Holmen.

Third baseman Kenna Streeck went 2 for 2 for Logan.

Onalaska 12, Sparta 5

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (6-4, 5-2 MVC) had seven players with at least one hit and six with at least one RBI in a win over the Spartans at Jaycee Fields.

Onalaska pushed its winning streak to three games and received two hits apiece from outfielder Cayenne Zinnecker, first baseman Zoey Lichty and center fielder/catcher Claire Weigel.

Lichty drove in four runs and stole a base, and Weigel doubled. Shortstop Sophia Larkin also doubled for the Hilltoppers, while third baseman Zoe Koonce-O’Kane tripled.

Larkin and Weigel both drove in two runs, and Onalaska came back from a 3-0 deficit after the top of the first inning with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Sydney Kraus struck out 13, walked one and allowed six hits in a complete game for Onalaska. She also scored two runs with a single and a walk.

Augusta 3, Melrose-Mindoro 2

MELROSE — The Mustangs (9-2) lost for the second time this season to the Beavers, who scored a run in the top of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie.

Shortstop Cooper Zeman was 3 for 3 with three singles, a run scored and a stolen base for Melrose-Mindoro, which scored twice in the third inning to tie the game at 2.

Second baseman Opal Buchanan and and right fielder Miranda Banse each drove in a run in the second, but the Mustangs couldn’t score again. Melrose-Mindoro loaded the bases on a single, intentional walk and walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Augusta pitcher Brooklyn Krueger ended the game with her 11th strikeout.

Bella Rozek pitched for Melrose-Mindoro and finished with seven hits allowed and two walks to go with one strikeout.

Tomah 10, Aquinas 0 (6)

TOMAH — The first-place Timberwolves no-hit the Blugolds (6-5, 2-5 MVC) and won the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth at La Grange Elementary.

Aquinas had won two straight conference games, and first baseman Ava Scholze drew a walk to lead off the fifth inning and break up the attempt at a perfect game for University of Wisconsin commit Anna Wall. Wall struck out 12 batters in the shutout.

Prairie du Chien 6, Central 1

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (2-11) allowed four runs in the first three innings and couldn’t bounce back at State Road.

First baseman Norah Holkuo was 3 for 3 with a double, and catcher Morgan Pacl stole a base for Central, which had just five hits.

Westby 15, Luther 6
Westby 8, Luther 4

WESTBY — The Knights (2-9, 1-7 Coulee) were beaten twice by the Norsemen.

Karlie Bauer hit a home run and Hannah Lipps doubled for Luther in the first game. Third baseman Rylee Weber was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases and an RBI, Bauer drove in two runs, and first baseman Alaina Flaherty drove in two runs.

Left fielder Keira Paus was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and Lipps 2 for 3 with two runs driven in for the Knights in the second game. First baseman Alaina Kuehner also doubled.
