Wednesday boys golf: Onalaska second in 20-team invitational at Cedar Creek

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School boys golf team placed second in a 20-team field during the Viking Invitational at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek on Wednesday.

The Hilltoppers finished with a team score of 307, which was only beaten by Waunakee’s 305. Onalaska finished comfortably ahead of third-place Madison West (314) and fourth-place River Falls (315).

Holmen placed 10th (332), Central/Logan 14th (347), and Aquinas tied for 15th (350).

Sophomore Rylan Tomashek shot the lowest round among local golfers, and his 2-over-par 73 was good for a share of second place among individuals. River Falls senior Ryan Swanson was medalist with a 1-under 71.

Onalaska junior Chasen Witt was the only other local name in the top 10, and his 4-over 75 put him in a tie for fifth place.

Tomashek shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine and birdied No. 1 and No. 2. He also birdied No. 12 but a double bogey at 16 pushed him above par on the back. Witt was 3 over on the front and 1 over on the back with birdies on No. 6, No. 12, No. 14 and No. 17.

Sophomore Colten Schroeder also shot a 78 and freshman Asher Andel an 81 for Onalaska. Schroeder had three birdies — Nos. 4, 5 and 12 — and Andel birdied No. 2.

Holmen received its low round from senior Gavin Steffen, who shot an 81 and placed 28th individually. He birdied No. 10 and shot 4 under on the back nine. The Vikings also had scoring rounds from senior Logan Pinnow (82), senior Cole Vankin (84) and senior Braylan Welch (85).

Junior Sid Hooyman shot an 80 (23rd place) to lead Central/Logan, which also received an 85 from freshman Nate Brudos, a 90 from junior Harper Kendle and a 92 from senior Chase Seeger.

Sophomore Luke Jones was 20th overall with a 79 to lead Aquinas. The Blugolds also got scoring rounds from sophomore James Siegert (87), junior Michael Jones (91) and junior Gabe Hundt (93).
