WIAA boys golf regional: Aquinas wins team title, while Siegert breaks par as medalist in Portage

PORTAGE — The Aquinas High School boys golf team was dominant during its WIAA Division 2 regional tournament at the Portage Golf Club on Wednesday.

The Blugolds, who are ranked seventh in Division 2 by state coaches, shot a collective 305 to beat the rest of the field by 14 strokes for a regional championship and spot in the New Glarus Sectional at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club on June 2.

Aquinas had the top two individuals, and sophomore James Siegert shot a 3-under-par 68 to beat junior teammate and runner-up Jack Vogel by seven strokes.

Siegert carded a 4-under 31 on the front nine before three bogeys left him at 1 over on the back. Siegert had four birdies — Nos. 3, 6, 8 and 9 — and five pars on the front and birdied No. 13 and No. 16 on the back nine.

Siegert played the par-5 holes at 3 under.

Vogel was 2 over on the front and 2 over on the back during his path toward a 4-over 75. He tied Lodi’s Kevin Kutz, and they finished one stroke lower than Lodi’s Jesse Munson.

Kutz and Munson helped the Blue Devils to a team score of 319, which left them comfortably ahead of third-place Portage (335).

Sophomore Luke Jones placed sixth with an 80 and junior Michael Jones seventh with an 82 to round out the Aquinas scorecard.

The Blugolds will try to qualify for their first state tournament at Edelweiss next week. The top two sectional teams advance, and Aquinas will run into both second-ranked Madison Edgewood and eighth-ranked Cambridge at the sectional.
