WIAA boys golf regionals: Onalaska, Holmen and area individuals qualify for sectional competition

SPARTA — The Onalaska High School boys golf team is a WIAA Division 1 regional champion after besting seven other schools in an 18-hole meet hosted at River Run Golf Course in Sparta on Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers, who are ranked eighth by state coaches and won the MVC championship, shot a 311 and beat second-place Reedsburg by one stroke. Holmen placed fourth with a 317 and will join Onalaska at the Reedsburg Sectional at the Reedsburg Country Club on June 2.

Top-ranked Middleton, third-ranked Madison West and sixth-ranked Waunakee will also be at the sectional, which advances the top two teams to the state tournament.

Holmen senior Logan Pinnow was the top local individual finisher with his runner-up performance and even-par round of 72. Pinnow was 1 under with two birdies and one bogey on the front nine and 1 over with three birdies and four bogeys on the back. He birdied Nos. 4, 9, 15, 17 and 18.

Onalaska had three in the top seven and all four scoring golfers among the top 13.

Junior Chasen Witt tied for third place with a 75, sophomore Colten Schroeder was sixth with a 77, and sophomore Rylan Tomashek was part of a seventh-place tie at 78.

Witt recorded one double bogey and eight pars on the front nine and was even on the back nine with one birdie at No. 17 and one bogey.

Schroeder was 4 over on the front, 1 over on the back and recorded birdies at Nos. 4, 14 and 15, and Tomashek was 2 over on the front, 4 over on the back and birdied No. 14.

Junior Grayson Andel was part of the tie for 13th place with an 81. He birdied No. 14.

Joining Onalaska and Holmen at the sectional will be Central/Logan junior Sid Hooyman, who finished 10th individual with a 79 and grabbed one of the four available individual qualifying spots.

Hooyman was 5 over on the front, 2 over on the back and had birdies at Nos. 4, 14 and 17.

Senior Sawyer Genz shot an 81 and seniors Braylan Welch and Ayden Dirks 82s for the Vikings.

Central/Logan received an 82 from sophomore Sam Hansen and 88s from freshman Nate Brudos and junior Harper Kendle.

DIVISION 3

HOLMEN — Luther missed out on a sectional berth as a team when a fourth-place tiebreaker was won by Eleva-Strum at Drugan’s Castle Mound.

The Knights and Cardinals both shot team scores of 358, but Eleva-Strum grabbed the team invitation to Trempealeau Mountain for sectional competition on June 2.

Luther sophomore Robert Bruns is an individual sectional qualifier after shooting 12-over 83 and earning a share of sixth place among individuals. Bruns was 8 over on the front and 4 over on the back and scored par on nine holes.

Freshman Jonah Matzke (89), senior Brody Greeno (91) and freshman Nolan Miller (95) also provided scoring rounds for the Knights.

DIVISION 2

TREMPEALEAU — West Salem placed seventh in the nine-team event with a team score of 341, but junior Noah Wachter qualified for the Spooner Sectional on June 3 by grabbing a share of seventh place at Trempealeau Mountain.

Wachter shot a 7-over 78 in a meet that was won by Bloomer’s Tegan Stiehl and his round of 71.

Bloomer also won the team title with a 304, and Black River Falls placed third (321) and will represent the Coulee Conference at Spooner.

Wachter was 2 over on the front and 5 over on the back. He carded birdies at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 10 to highlight his round.

The Panthers rounded out their team score with an 86 from junior Kayden Tauscher, an 87 from freshman Cadyn Reding and a 90 from senior Coen Knutson.
