LA CROSSE — The Logan High School baseball team took advantage of a passed ball in the fourth inning to pick up a 2-1 nonconference victory over visiting Prairie du Chien on Tuesday.
The Rangers (1-1) broke a 1-1 tie when Owen Check led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, moved to second when Hank Bosch walked and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Charlie Zellner.
After a strikeout, Check raced down the third-base line on the first pitch to Mason Welch and scored what became the winning run.
The Rangers had just two hits, but Bosch walked to lead off the second, moved to third on a fly out and ground out before scoring on a wild pitch.
Jackson Bosch, Hank Bosch and Check combined to strike out 11 and walk four over seven innings.
Jackson Bosch struck out eight over four innings, and the fourth-inning run scored by the Blackhawks was unearned.
Melrose-Mindoro 11, Independence/Gilmanton 1 (5)
MELROSE — Senior shortstop/right fielder Colton Koss was 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, three runs scored and three runs driven in for the victorious Mustangs (2-0).
Melrose-Mindoro scored 10 runs in the first three innings, and Koss hit an inside-the-park solo home run to right field in the fifth.
Right fielder/pitcher Isaiah Kleinsmith was also 3 for 3 with a triple and three runs driven in for the Mustangs, who received three-hit pitching from Jacob Thesing and Kleinsmith.
Thesing struck out nine, walked two alnd allowed three hits over four innings, and Kleinsmith struck out two of the three batters he faced in the fifth.
First baseman Brady Blaken doubled and went 2 for 2 with three runs scored, and third baseman Eric Herzberg was 2 for 2 and scored three times.
West Salem 4, Black River Falls 2
WEST SALEM — The Panthers (1-1) won for the first time this season by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth.
West Salem faced a 2-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the fifth before first baseman Terryn Boland doubled home Mekebo Anderson with the first run, and designated hitter Luke Grube followed with a two-run home run to right field.
Boland also scored left fielder Aidan Hillyer with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Anderson, who played shortstop and center field, went 3 for 3.
Will Schmidt struck out nine over five innings. He walked two, allowed five hits and one earned run before Henry Bakkum closed it out with two scoreless innings.
