HOLMEN — The Holmen High School baseball team scored five times in the first three innings on the way to an 8-4 MVC victory over visiting Sparta on Monday.
The Vikings (1-0) had 12 hits and turned four errors by the Spartans into three unearned runs to give first-year coach Andy Palmer a win in his debut.
Junior center fielder Mason Flury doubled twice while going 3 for 4 and scoring a run for Holmen, which had seven players with at least one hit.
Holmen scored three runs in the first innings, and Flury kicked the inning off with a double before advancing to third base and scoring on a wild pitch. Junior Chris Holmes also doubled home a run and scored on an error after a single by junior third baseman Landen Kelly.
Holmes and Kelly each singled and doubled, and senior right fielder/first baseman Joe Meeter was 2 for 3, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Junior shortstop Nolan Mashak had two of Holmen’s six stolen bases.
Junior Alex Goryl was the winning pitcher with four scoreless innings that included six strikeouts, six hits allowed and three walks.

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (2-0) recorded a sweep of the Trojans in a season-opening doubleheader.
Landon O’Heron pitched a complete-game two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the opener. He walked one and allowed two singles and struck out four of the final six batters he faced.
Caledonia broke open the first game with a five-run third inning and six of its 12 hits went for extra bases.
Center fielder Will Allen was 2 for 4 with two doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored. First baseman Jack Schmitz also doubled twice while going 2 for 5.
Shortstop Tyson Ginther and third baseman Max Schmitz also had two hits, and one of Ginther’s was a double. O’Heron also doubled and drove in two runs for Caledonia.
Jack Schmitz also had two hits — one of them a triple — in the second game. Second baseman Jacob Klug matched Schmitz was a 2-for-3 performance, and catcher Braiden DeFlorian drove in three runs.
Allen pitched the second game and struck out six over 6 1/3 innings.
Tomah 9, Logan 1
TOMAH — The Rangers (0-1) began their season with a loss to the Timberwolves (2-0).
Center fielder Sam Diehl grounded into a fielder’s choice to score courtesy runner Ryan Thurman in the top of the second inning for Logan.
Shortstop Hank Bosch and left fielder Charlie Zellner both singled for the Rangers’ only hits.
