It isn’t a make-or-break game for the University of Northern Michigan women’s basketball team, but a win over first-place Grand Valley State on Thursday would certainly tighten things up at the top of the GLIAC standings.
The Wildcats (17-3 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) have won four straight games and five of six, but a second shot at Grand Valley State (18-0, 10-0) could result in closing the difference between the teams to one game. They are tied for second place with Ferris State.
Senior and Aquinas High School graduate Jacy Weisbrod was just named the offensive player of the week for the conference a second time this season and is a big reason for Northern Michigan contending for the GLIAC championship.
Weisbrod averaged 21 points in wins over Purdue Northwest and Wayne State last week and made 11 of 17 attempts from the 3-point line in those games.
She leads the GLIAC with a scoring average of 17.3 points per game and leads all of NCAA Division II with 72 made 3-pointers. She is shooting 43.1 percent from long range, which ranks 10th nationally, and averages 4.4 rebounds per game.
Weisbrod scored 1,491 points and made 314 3-pointers during her career with the Blugolds.
The Wildcats lost their first game against Grand Valley State this season 78-66. Weisbrod was held to four points and missed all three of her 3-point attempts that night but has scored 21 points in four straight games entering this one.
