Thursday boys basketball: West Salem, Central, Luther pick up victories

WEST SALEM — Senior Nate Dillaber made six 3-pointers, and the West Salem High School boys basketball team played its starters minimally in a 77-35 Coulee Conference victory over visiting Arcadia on Thursday.

Dillaber made three 3s in the first half and three more in the second to finish with a team-high 18 points.
Twelve players scored for the first-place Panthers (8-1, 4-0), who led 46-20 after one half and won their third game in a row.

West Salem also received 13-point performances from Drew McConkey and Tyson Labus and 10 points from Carter Alexander.

Central 78, Winona 53

WINONA — The RiverHawks (7-2) won their third game in a row and second in two days after beating Logan on Thursday.

Junior Anthony Jones scored 29 points on 9-for-19 shooting and knocked down 3 of 6 attempts from the 3-point line. Jones also had seven rebounds and three assists for Central, which plays little Chute in the 8:30 p.m. game Friday in the Midwest Players Classic at the La Crosse Center.

Junior Gabe Servais added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, and junior Will Schilling scored 12 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.

The RiverHawks made 8 of 16 3-point attempts and scored 30 points off of Winona turnovers.

Onalaska Luther 67, Black River Falls 50

ONALASKA — The Knights (7-4, 3-0 Coulee) outscored the Tigers by 12 points after halftime to pull away for the conference win.

Onalaska Luther is a half-game behind West Salem (4-0) in the Coulee standings and was led against Black River Falls by senior Brody Greeno’s 21 points. Greeno also had 14 rebounds and four steals for the Knights in their third consecutive victory.

Junior Trent Berg, senior Max Huelskamp and freshman J.J. Abdul-Haqq all added nine points for Luther, which has won five of its past six games. Berg also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Lewiston-Altura 74, Caledonia 67

CALEDONIA — The Cardinals handed the Warriors (8-5) their second loss in three games.

Junior Jacoby Hammell scored a team-high 18 points, and sophomore Grant King added 15 for Caledonia, which was outscored by seven points in the first half before the team finished even in the second.

Sophomore Colin Stemper and senior Zeke Gengler added eight points each for the Warriors, who play unbeaten and top-ranked Onalaska at the Midwest PLayers Classic on Saturday night.
