Thursday boys basketball: Central knocks off Holmen with strong first half

LA CROSSE — The Central High School boys basketball team took control of visiting Holmen early and turned a 17-point halftime lead into a 59-45 victory in an MVC opener at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday.

The RiverHawks (2-1, 1-0 MVC) won their second game in a row and held the Vikings (2-2, 0-1) to 6-for-24 shooting (25 percent) in the first half to take charge in a game where they had three double-figure scorers.

Junior Gabe Servais made 6 of 14 shots on his way to a team-high 15 points for Central, which had a 36-19 lead by halftime. Junior Will Schilling added 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting to go with five rebounds, and junior Anthony Jones made 7 of 8 free throws on his way to 12 points for the RiverHawks.

Holmen was led by sophomore Cohen Kendhammer’s 15 points and a nine-point, 10-rebound performance from junior Jax Meyer. Senior Alex Berget also scored nine points for the Vikings, who trailed from start to finish.

Onalaska 89, Logan 56

LA CROSSE — The Hilltoppers (2-0, 1-0 MVC) won their conference opener at the Steve Hole Field House and were led by sophomore Gavin McRoberts’ game-high 20 points.

Onalaska, which is fourth in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, also had three other players in double figures in beating Logan.

Sophomore Tyler Kowal scored 16 points, while senior Ian Kowal had 13 and junior Brendan Chenault 11.
Logan (0-2, 0-1) was led by junior Ryan Thurman’s 12 points. Sophomore Tommy Check and junior Bubba Leaver had eight apiece.

Tomah 71, Onalaska Luther 62

ONALASKA — The Knights (1-2) dropped their second straight game after a big second-half comeback against Melrose-Mindoro in their opener.

Senior Brody Greeno made four 3-pointers and 7 of 17 shots to lead Onalaska Luther, which also received 12 points from junior Trent Berg and 10 points to go with five assists from junior Logan Pierce.

Freshman Javon Zenke also scored nine points for the Knights.
