Tuesday boys basketball report: Onalaska holds off Sparta, Aquinas beats Logan in city game

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School boys basketball team had to fight off a nice first-half run by Sparta to score a 73-58 MVC victory at John Shelton Court on Tuesday.

The Spartans (8-3, 0-1) had a five-game win streak snapped in their conference opener, but a 13-0 run gave them a five-point lead in the first half. The Hilltoppers (8-2, 1-1), who won their fourth game in a row and handed Sparta its 37th straight MVC defeat.

Senior Broden Steiner scored a game-high 24 points and was a problem in the lane the Spartans could never figure out. Steiner slammed down a dunk in the first half and got to the rim at will in the second.

Junior Ian Kowal also made a couple of 3-pointers during a personal 11-0 run in the second half and finished with 18 points.

Aquinas 89, Logan 40

The first-place Blugolds (10-0, 2-0) have started their conference season by sweeping city opponents and led the Rangers (4-5, 0-1) 53-25 by halftime at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.

Eleven players scored for Aquinas, which made nine 3-pointers and was led by sophomore Calvin Bahr’s 18 points. Bahr made two 3-pointers and scored 14 of his points in the first half.

Junior Finley Strom added 17 points, while junior Logan Becker scored 15 and senior Trey Bahr 13. Strom made three 3-pointers and Becker two.

Senior Bradley Check made four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points for Logan.

Central 68, Tomah 42

TOMAH — The RiverHawks (4-3, 1-1) dominated the Timberwolves (4-4, 0-1) and had a 14-point lead by halftime.

Central received 14 points apiece from senior Frankie Wilk and sophomore Gabe Servais. Servais also had six rebounds.

Senior Jaylon Calvert added 11 points and seven rebounds for Central, which entered the game having lost two games in a row.

Holmen 81, Chippewa Falls 55

CHIPPEWA FALLS — The Vikings (6-2) played their first game in nearly three weeks and built a 46-23 lead after one half.

Junior Alex Berget made 9 of 14 shots and knocked down 2 of 4 from behind the 3-point line on his way to a team-high 20 points.

Holmen shot 51 percent from the 3-point line an nine players made at least once during a 15-for-29 performance. Sophomore Jayden Bartels made 3 of 5 and finished with 10 points.

Senior Kaiden Wilber was 2-for-4 from 3-point range and made 5 of 9 shots overall while scoring 15 points. Holmen shot 51 percent from the floor (31-for-60), 51 percent from two-point range (16-for-31) and made 4 of 5 free throws. Senior Keenan Eisermann led the Vikings with five rebounds and tied senior Parker Lindberg for the team lead with five assists.

Arcadia 69, Durand-Arkansaw 53

DURAND — Senior Kaiden Rotering returned from a one-game absence due to injury and led the Raiders (5-5) with 22 points. He scored 12 points in the first half and made three 3-pointers.

Sophomore Carter Wegman made two 3-pointers and all four of his free throws during a 16-point game, and sophomore Trevor Pronschinske came off the bench to add 13 points for Arcadia, which pulled away from a three-point lead after one half.

West Salem 71, G-E-T 66

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (7-3) won for the second time in three games and built a 32-23 lead after one half before holding on for the victory over the Red Hawks (4-7).

Junior Nathan Dillaber made three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and scored 15 of his team-high 20 points after halftime. Senior Kyle Hehli made 10 of 13 free throws and added 18 points for the Panthers, while senior teammate Carter Pontius added 10 points.

Senior Jackson Burns scored a game-high 22 points for G-E-T, which also received 19 from Brecken Ebersold and 18 from Mason Brone. That trio combined for all but seven of the Red Hawks’ points.
