WIAA boys tennis sectionals: Aquinas’ Schott and Central’s Wonderling and Romano qualify for state tournament

EAU CLAIRE — Senior Tegan Schott completed an unbeaten performance to win his bracket and help the Aquinas High School boys tennis team to a second-place finish in the WIAA Division 2 Altoona Sectional on Thursday.

Schott (21-4) earned a spot in the individual state tournament by winning the No. 1 singles championship and push the Blugolds toward 32 team points at the Menard Tennis Center.

Altoona scored 54 points to qualify for the team state tournament.

Schott beat Shawano’s Enrique Omella Valls 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal round before Altoona’s Trenton Navarre had to default due to an injury in the finals.

Schott will have a spot in the state bracket at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison on June 4.

The top four finishers at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and the winners at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles qualify for the state tournament.

Sophomore Henry McGovern (10-13) added a second-place finish at No. 4 singles, while senior Isaac Capelli (15-7) was third at No. 2 singles and sophomore Korwin Bessinger (12-14) fourth at No. 3 singles.

McGovern beat Shawano’s Everett Grover 6-0, 6-2 in his semifinal match before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Altoona’s Connor Gower in the championship match.

Capelli beat Medford’s Blaine Searles 6-3, 6-3 in his third-place match.

Sophomores Samuel Murray and Isaac Smith also placed third for the Blugolds at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Medford’s Austin Czarnezki and Lucas Mahner in the placement match.

DIVISION 1

MADISON — Central will be represented by its No. 1 doubles team of senior Drake Wonderling and freshman Ian Romano after they placed third in their bracket at the Madison Memorial Sectional.

Wonderling and Romano were knocked out of the semifinal round in straight sets before rebounding with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tomah’s Sam Bannan and Boe Rewey for third place at the Nielsen Tennis Center.

Central’s No. 2 doubles team of juniors Ryan Tschumper and Henry Hanson were third at No. 2 doubles with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Logan’s Rohan Pande and Philip Myers.

Logan junior Parker Stevermer (17-8) placed third at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Tomah’s Brennan Brown, and Logan freshman Luke Kelly (14-6) was fourth at No. 4 singles.

Central juniors Isaac Gabriel and Spencer Hinton placed fourth at No. 3 doubles.

The Rangers were the top performing local team with 21 points, which were good for fifth place. Central was seventh with 14 and Onalaska ninth with 10.
