Boys basketball: Castellano takes over head job at Onalaska

Onalaska boys basketball coach Isaac Castellano

ONALASKA — Isaac Castellano was announced on Thursday as the next boys basketball coach at Onalaska High School.

Castellano is a science teacher at the school and was on the staff as an assistant for former coach Craig Kowal — who stepped down this spring — the past three seasons.

The Hilltoppers won 347 games and lost 102 during Kowal’s 18 seasons at the head of the program.

Castellano played four seasons at UW-River Falls and helped the Falcons win regular-season and tournament championships in the WIAC. He also has coaching experience on the high school, AAU and collegiate levels.

Onalaska was 21-4 last season and won the MVC with an 11-1 record. Three of its top four scorers from last season — Tyler Kowal (16.7 points per game), Gavin McRoberts (11.6) and Brendan Chenault (7.9) all return for Castellano’s first season.

He will be presented for the position at the next school board meeting on May 25.
