Friday baseball: Aquinas beats West Salem with big seventh inning, Holmen gets a DH sweep, and Thesing pitches 1-hitter for Mustangs

WEST SALEM — The Aquinas High School baseball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and hand West Salem a 6-2 nonconference defeat at Damian Miller Field on Friday.

The Blugolds (8-2) loaded the bases with an error, a walk and a single by pitcher Landon Teachout. A groundout by right fielder Henry Holinka brought home one run, and a bunt by second baseman Parks Tobin another.

Left fielder Eddie Berendes followed with a two-out run scoring single to right field, and shortstop Marcus Klar later drew a walk with the bases loaded for the final run.

Teachout ended up 2 for 3, and catcher Ryan Johnson drove in two runs for Aquinas. Teachout also pitched a complete game and allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four.

Third baseman Waylon Hargrove walked twice and stole three bases.

Shortstop Mekebo Anderson and catcher Will Schmidt each drove in a run for the Panthers (5-5). Schmidt and center fielder Berkley Brose both doubled.

Holmen 9, Menomonie 7

HOLMEN — The Vikings (7-5) built big leads early in both games in a sweep of the Mustangs.

Holmen scored eight runs in the second, third and fourth innings of the first game, but Menomonie tightened things up with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Second baseman Nolan Lomas was 3 for 4 and drove in three runs for the Vikings, who hit four doubles. Shortstop Nolan Mashak was also 3 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Right fielder Joe Meeter, center fielder Mason Flury, first baseman Maddax Connely and catcher Noah Carlson all doubled for Holmen. Flury and Carlson had two hits apiece, and Carlson drove in two runs.

Meeter, Flury and Mashak each hit a home run in the second game, and Flury drove in four runs while going 2 for 4. Meeter and Flury both hit a two-run homer to right field in the second inning, and Masha hit a solo shot in the fourth.

Meeter was 2 for 3 and Lomas and Mashak 2 for 4 as the Vikings finished the doubleheader with eight extra-base hits and 23 total hits.

Melrose-Mindoro 13, Independence/Gilmanton 0 (5)

INDEPENDENCE — The Mustangs (8-1), who are fourth in this week’s Division 3 rankings by state coaches, scored nine runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Jacob Thesing pitched a one-hitter and finished with five strikeouts and two walks.

Third baseman Eric Herzberg went 3 for 4 , doubled and drove in four runs for Melrose-Mindoro, which had 11 hits.

Shortstop Colton Koss went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in two runs, and first baseman Wade Adams was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Caledonia 8, Lewiston-Altura 7

LEWISTON — The Warriors) held off a seventh-inning rally to turn the tables on the Cardinals after losing to them on Thursday.

A two-run single had Lewiston-Altura within a run with two outs in the seventh, but Caledonia’s Will Allen ended the game with a strikeout.

The Warriors had 11 hits, and five players had two. Jack Schmitz doubled, went 2 for five and drove in a team-high three runs.

Left fielder Cooper Allen was 2 for 3, pitcher/shortstop Tyson Ginther 2 for 4 and center fielder Max Schmitz and third baseman Jacob Klug 2 for 5.

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (8-4) were held to eight hits at Copeland Park and have lost four of their past five games.

The Old Abes scored a run in the top of the seventh to win the first game.

Second baseman Jake Larson singled, walked, stole a base and drove in a run for Central in that one. Drew Ehler-Blum pitched six innings, struck out eight and allowed two walks and four hits.

Shortstop Aiden Schulze singled, stole a base, scored a run and walked twice for the RiverHawks in the second game.

Reedsburg 11, Onalaska 1 (5)
Reedsburg 13, Onalaska 2 (5)

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (5-6) had six hits in each game but made six errors that led to eight unearned runs.

First baseman Ian Kowal was 2 for 2 with a stolen base, and Carter DeLong drove in the run in the opener, and shortstop/pitcher Tyler Kowal was 3 for with a double and a stolen base and an RBI in the second game. Ian Kowal also drove in a run.
