Thursday boys basketball: Onalaska clinches outright MVC title, Central tops West Salem and Aquinas tips Holmen in OT

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School boys basketball team put the finishing touch on an outright MVC championship Thursday with an 88-56 victory over Tomah at the Chuck Deeth Fieldhouse.

Senior Ian Kowal scored a game-high 20 points for the Hilltoppers, who finish the regular season with an overall record of 20-3 and MVC mark of 11-1, which places them one game ahead of second-place Central (10-2).

Onalaska — ranked third in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll — won its fourth straight game since a nonconference loss to Kimberly and has averaged 91.7 points over its past three games.

Sophomore Gavin McRoberts added 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while sophomore Tyler Kowal scored 14 points.

Seniors Rowan McGrath and Trent Oyen added 10 and eight points, respectively.

Central 68, West Salem 50

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks — ranked sixth in Division 2 — jumped out to a 34-20 lead over the eighth-ranked Panthers after one half and held on for the nonconference victory at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

Junior Anthony Jones and Will Schilling each scored 18 points for Central (20-4), which bounced back from a nonconference loss to River Falls and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Juniors Ezra Wiese and Gabe Servais added nine points apiece for the RiverHawks. Wiese had a team-high six rebounds and Jones a team-high six assists.

West Salem (20-4) shot just 31.4 percent (16 for 51) from the floor, and 10 of those made field goals were 3-pointers.

Junior Elliott Corcoran made three of those 3s and scored a team-high 18 points. Senior Nathan Dillaber also made three 3s and scored 10 points.

Senior Spencer Kammel had a team-high eight rebounds, and Central held the scoring duo of senior Tyson Labus and junior Drew McConkey that averages a combined 31 points per game to six.

Caledonia 71, St. Charles 42

CALEDONIA — The sixth-seeded Warriors (16-10) opened the MSHSL Section 1AA tournament with an easy win over the 11th-seeded Saints.

Sophomore Grant King made two 3-pointers and scored 23 points for Caledonia, which next plays third-seeded Cannon Falls at the Rochester Mayo Civic Arena on March 3.

Junior Jacoby Hammel added 16 points and a dunk, and senior Aaron Stemper made two 3s on his way to 13 points.

Aquinas 62, Holmen 60 (OT)

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (19-4, 8-3) completed a season sweep of the Vikings (13-11, 4-8) and a third-place finish in the conference standings.

Junior Calvin Bahr scored 16 of his team-high 22 points in the second half and after Aquinas took a 29-26 halftime lead. Senior Logan Becker made a pair of 3-pointers and added 12, while senior Finley Strom scored 10 points.

Sophomore Cohen Kendhammer scored 18 points to lead Holmen. Junior Jayden Bartels made two 3s and scored 15 points, and senior Alex Berget scored 12 points for the Vikings.

G-E-T 84, Luther 74

ONALASKA — The Red Hawks (20-4, 10-2 Coulee) outscored the Knights (13-11, 7-5) by 10 points in the second half for the victory.

Freshman Javon Zenke scored 18 points and added four rebounds and four assists for Luther. He also made both of his attempts from the 3-point line.

Junior Trent Berg had 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while junior Logan Pierec had nine points and a team-high eight assists.

Freshman J.J. Abdul-Haqq scored 12 points, and senior Max Huelskamp had 11 to go with seven rebounds for Luther.

Sparta 68, Logan 62

SPARTA — The Spartans beat the Rangers (2-22, 1-11) to close out the regular season.

Logan received a team-high 20 points from senior Dio Leone and 11 from sophomore Henry Bosch.
