Bi-State Classic: Three local wrestlers will compete for championships tonight

The semifinal round is complete, and the couleesports.com coverage area will have three wrestlers competing for Bi-State Classic championships at the La Crosse Center Tuesday night.

Aquinas High School senior Tyson Martin, Aquinas sophomore Martez Sheard and Holmen junior Aini Anderson emerged with victories Tuesday morning to continue unbeaten tournaments.

Sheard (17-1) is trying to become a two-time Bi-State champion and will go for the boys title at 126 pounds. Seeded second, he followed up a perfect Monday with an 11-0 major decision over third-seeded Carson Weiler (19-2) of Auburndale in the semifinal round.

Sheard meets Chatfield sophomore Logan Pearson (15-1), who escaped his semifinal match against Holmen junior Brock Needham (17-3) with a 6-5 victory in an ultimate tiebreak, in the championship match.

Martin (17-1) continued a dominant run by scoring a technical fall over the second seed at 285. Martin, seeded third, had three pins and a tech fall on Monday, and he pummeled Prairie du Chien senior Jack Simmons (20-1) in a 19-4 semifinal match that didn’t get through the first period.

That gives him a title bout against top-seeded Grant Mathews (24-0) of Riverdale. Mathews advanced with a medical forfeit in the semifinals but won all previous matches by tech fall or pin and was the WIAA Division 3 state champ at 285 last year.

Anderson (15-1) continued her string of pins with her third in a row during Tuesday morning’s semifinals.

She advances to the championship match at 100 and will be the top seed against unseeded seventh-grader Alaina Williams (5-0) of Cannon Falls/Randolph. Williams beat the second seed by decision in the quarterfinal round and pinned the third seed in her semifinal.

Anderson has pinned all of her opponents, and her longest Bi-State match this season has lasted 1 minute, 38 seconds.
