Friday boys basketball: Central collects first win; West Salem wins first game under Schmeling

MARSHFIELD — Junior Anthony Jones broke free for 21 points, and the Central High School boys basketball team outscored Marshfield by five points after halftime for a 50-46 nonconference victory on Friday.

Jones made 7 of 16 shots and knocked down 2 of 4 attempts from the 3-point line to help the RiverHawks (1-1) pick up their first win of the season. Jones also made 5 of 6 free throws and recorded three steals as Central put a victory under its belt as it turns the focus to an MVC opener against Holmen on Dec. 11.

Junior Gabe Servais scored eight points, and junior Will Schilling added seven points and seven rebounds for the RiverHawks, who won despite making just 16 of 59 shots (27.1 percent) in a game that was tied five times. Joey Pretasky also grabbed six rebounds for Central.

Servais knocked down a 3-pointer to give Central a 43-42 lead with five minutes to play, and Schilling made two free throws to put the RiverHawks in front 45-44 with 2:30 left.

West Salem 71, Tomah 57

TOMAH — The Panthers won in the debut for coach Shane Schmeling.

Senior Nathan Dillaber made six 3-pointers — five in the first half and from long-range — and scored a team-high 22 points for West Salem, which had three scorers reach double figures in their first game of the season.

Seniors Tyson Labus and Spencer Kammel each added 15 points for the Panthers, who outscored the Timberwolves by 11 points in the second half. Labus scored 11 and Kammel eight in the second half.
Junior Drew McConkey also scored eight of his nine points in the second half for West Salem.

Tomah junior Quinn Gerke scored 18 points and reached the 1,000-point mark for his career.

G-E-T 66, Holmen 63

HOLMEN — The Vikings (1-1) had a three-point halftime lead turned into a three-point loss by the Red Hawks, who had four scorers in double figures and were led by 17 points and 10 rebounds from senior Mason Brone.

Junior Jax Meyer scored a team-high 13 points to go with four rebounds for Holmen (1-1), which made 7 of 21 3-point attempts. Junior Jayden Bartels and junior Brody Wilber each made two of those, and Bartels finished with 12 points and three steals.

Senior Alex Berget added 10 points and sophomore Cohen Kendhammer a team-high five rebounds for the Vikings.

Sparta 89, Onalaska Luther 56

ONALASKA — Junior Trent Berg scored 17 points, and freshman Javon Zenke added 16 for the Knights (1-1), who trailed by 10 points after making a run at the end of the first half before the Spartans pulled away.

Junior Everett Laufenberg scored 22 points and senior Kayden Kaat 20 for Sparta, which made 12 3-pointers.
