MELROSE — The Onalaska Luther High School boys basketball team used a big second half to erase a substantial deficit and begin its season with a 62-55 nonconference victory over Melrose-Mindoro on Monday.
The Knights (1-0) outscored the Mustangs (1-1) by 29 points after halftime and were led by senior Brody Greeno’s 18 points as his team spent the entire second half in a full-court press. Greeno also grabbed six rebounds.
Junior Jonny Holub and freshmen J.J. Abdul-Haqq and Javon Zenke each scored nine points, and Zenke had a team-high three steals for Luther. Senior Max Huelskamp added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Melrose-Mindoro was led by sophomore Brooks Cowley’s game-high 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting. He has scored 41 points in his team’s first two games.
Sophomore teammate Seth Mulder made three of the Mustangs’ nine 3-pointers and added 11 points. Junior Isaiah Kleinsmith pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
