WIAA volleyball: Luther wins first regional in 30 years; Aquinas wins seventh regional in a row

ONALASKA — The Onalaska Luther High School volleyball team is a WIAA regional champion for the first time in 30 years.

The second-seeded Knights have qualified for a Division 3 sectional semifinal after knocking off third-seeded Richland Center 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 in a regional final played at Luther on Saturday.

Luther (19-10) won its third match in a row and will host fourth-seeded Aquinas (16-14) — a regular postseason foe — in a sectional final on Thursday. That match begins at 7 p.m.

Senior Kayla Schiebel and sophomore Audrey Clark both had 11 kills for the Knights, who tied for second place in the Coulee Conference this season. Schiebel also had a team-high five blocks.

Sophomore Tessa Gloede added eight kills, and sophomore Cara Unke and junior Olivia Gregas had five apiece.

Junior Addie Schaper had 36 assists, and senior Kamryn Anderson had a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore Carsyn Krause had 11 digs, Clark had five service aces, and Gloede added four blocks.

Aquinas 3, Viroqua 1

VIROQUA — The visiting Blugolds (16-14) won their seventh straight regional title by beating the top-seeded Blackhawks 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 25-19.

Senior Sammy Davis had a team-high 16 kills to go with 14 digs, two aces and one block.

Junior Adi Bezemek had a team-high 29 assists, nine digs and four blocks, and junior Aubrey Coyne led Aquinas with 18 digs.

The Blugolds play at second-seeded Luther at 7 p.m. Thursday with the winner advancing to a sectional final at Richland Center next Saturday.

Waunakee 3, Central 0

WAUNAKEE — The visiting and eighth-seeded RiverHawks came up short against the top-seeded and fourth-ranked Warriors in a 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 match.

Central (15-14) was led by junior Ellie Gillitzer’s 10 kills, 10 assists and 10 digs. Junior Celia Christopherson also had 10 digs for the RiverHawks,.
