MADISON — West Salem High School senior Kendall Sullivan was denied the chance to play for fifth place in the Division 2 singles bracket of the WIAA state girls tennis tournament on Saturday.
Sullivan (28-4) advanced to the consolation bracket with wins in two of her first three matches at the Nielsen Tennis Center, and she matched up with fifth-seeded Caroline Gerovac (24-9) to play for the right for a fifth-place match. Gerovac started her big day with a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-6 win over Sullivan before beating Kohler’s Grace Villwock (22-6) 7-6, 6-1 in the placement match.
Sullivan, Aquinas senior Tenzin Nelson, Onalaska Luther seniors Emma Kolb, Kenzie Olson and Keira Paus and Onalaska junior Mara Klein (16-9) all qualified to play in the state tournament. Nelson (29-3) and Kolb (29-5) won first-round singles matches — Nelson in Division 1 and Kolb in Division 2 — before being eliminated. Olson and Paus (26-8) also won once in the Division 2 doubles backet.
