Girls basketball, hockey report: West Salem, Holmen lead games start to finish

WEST SALEM — The West Salem High School girls basketball team used an early burst for separation and followed it all the way to a 61-38 nonconference victory over visiting Onalaska on Friday.

The Panthers (5-1, 1-0) won their second game of the week to set up a Saturday game against Hudson at UW-River Falls.

Senior Megan Johnson, a Winona State University commit, scored a game-high 21 points for West Salem, which used a 16-4 run in the first half to build a 22-9 lead that extended from there. The Panthers led the Hilltoppers 33-18 at the half.

West Salem also received 15 points from senior Sydney Quick and two 3-pointers and nine points from junior Josie Brudos.

Onalaska (0-2) was led by sophomore Lauren Pica’s three 3-pointers and nine points.

Holmen 49, DeForest 42

HOLMEN — The Vikings (1-2) picked up their first win and led the Norskies (2-3) from start to finish at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

DeForest closed out the first half with a 10-3 run to get within 28-24 by halftime, but Holmen maintained a consistent lead throughout the second half and made 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Junior Charley Casey had 10 points and 15 rebounds while making good decisions with the ball and getting it in the right places, while making the lane a miserable place for the Norskies. Junior Macy Kline scored a team-high 13 points, and senior Imani Toso made three timely 3-pointers on her way to 11.

Onalaska Luther 73, G-E-T 28

ONALASKA — The Knights (3-1, 2-0) stretched their winning streak to three games by dominating the Red Hawks (0-5, 0-1).

Junior Alexis Schmitz scored a career-high 14 points, and freshman Cara Unke had her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Luther, which held a 45-14 halftime lead.

Halene DeJager scored six points to lead G-E-T, and teammates Sam Filla, Joshlyn Lunsford and Lexi James had six rebounds each.

Senior Allie Zittel had 13 points and seven steals and senior Macie Neumeister 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Knights.

Arcadia 60, Westby 39

WESTBY — The Raiders (4-1, 2-0) took sole possession of the Coulee Conference lead by outscoring the Norsemen (1-3, 0-2) by 10 points in the first half, then holding them to 13 points in the second half.

Sophomore Tatum Drazkowski scored 14 of her team-high 23 points in the first half and finished with three 3-pointers. She made two of them in the first half.

The Raiders made seven 3s, and junior Justine Sonsalla (8 points) made two of them. Sophomore Madison Grotjahn added nine points and teammate sophomore Chloe Schlosstein eight.

Black River Falls 46, Viroqua 39

VIROQUA — The Tigers (2-2, 1-1) were led by senior Bella Falcon’s 22 points and sophomore Morgan Jundinger’s seven in a victory over the Blackhawks (1-3, 0-2).

Freshman Allyah Schwem scored a team-high 19 for Viroqua.

Ellsworth 37, Logan 26

ELLSWORTH — The Rangers (1-3) were up 15-5 and held an 18-9 halftime lead before losing to the Panthers.

Junior Kaia DePaolo scored a team-high eight points for Logan, which scored just eight second-half points.

Cashton 45, Hillsboro 43

CASHTON — The Eagles (4-2, 1-0) opened the conference by nipping the Tigers.

Senior Taylor Lindley-Schendel scored 16 points to lead Cashton to its second win in three games. Sophomore Kennedy Brown added nine for the Eagles.

Caledonia 61, Rushford-Peterson 31

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (3-0, 2-0) celebrated senior Josie Foster’s 1,000th point during an 11-point performance and one-sided victory over the Trojans.

Aubrie Klug led Caledonia with 14 points, while Nicole Banse and Elsa Blum chipped in 11 apiece, Kensey King eight and Sienna Augedahl six.

Necedah 44, Brookwood 22

ONTARIO — The Falcons were led by eight points from freshman Ashlynn Leiss, and the Cardinals by senior Addisyn Schumer’s game-high 10.

Royall 48, Wonewoc-Center 30

WONEWOC — The Panthers (2-2, 1-0) received a team-high 14 points from Bria Gruen in their second straight victory.
