Thursday high school football/swimming report: De Soto wins big, Central loses to Waunakee

VIOLA — The De Soto High School football team scored all but one of its touchdowns in the first half on its way to beating Kickapoo/La Farge 46-0 in a Ridge and Valley Conference opener on Thursday.

Senior Finn Wrobel passed for 57 yards and two touchdowns as the Pirates won their first game of the season for the seventh straight year.

De Soto scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to take charge and added two more in the second and another in the third. The Pirates also played well enough defensively to open with a shut for the second straight season.

Senior Austin DeFlorian carried 10 times for 108 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 9, 5 and 14 yards for De Soto, which hosts Princeton/Green Lake in a nonconference game at The Pit on Aug. 29.

Senior Bryce Schultz caught both of Wrobel’s touchdown passes — one went for 47 yards — and senior Griffin Hanson blocked two punts and recovered one in the end zone for De Soto’s fourth touchdown of the game.

Waunakee 55, Central 6

LA CROSSE — The Riverhawks took one on the chin at the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.

Senior quarterback Christian Rudrud completed a 37-yard touchdown to senior Connor Groth in the second quarter, but that’s all Central could piece together against the Warriors defense.

Rudrud completed 8 of 10 passes for 108 yards, and Groth caught 3 of those passes for 86 yards. Rudrud also carried 15 times for 54 yards, but those opportunities disappeared early when Waunakee scored three touchdowns in the first quarter.
