Tuesday boys basketball roundup: La Crosse Central pulls off another big victory at West Salem

TODD SOMMERFELDT

WEST SALEM — The Central High School boys basketball team ran its winning streak to three games and pulled off a second big victory in four days with a 50-43 nonconference win at West Salem on Tuesday.

The RiverHawks (10-5) used 14 points from Joey Pretasky and 12 from sophomore Gabe Servais to hand the cold-shooting Panthers (12-5) their second loss in a row. West Salem made 16 of 52 shots (30.8 percent) and just 5 of 21 attempts from the 3-point line.

“I thought our guys were fairly solid defensively,” said Central coach Todd Fergot, whose team beat Tomah on Friday and Onalaska on Saturday. “Offensively, we did enough in some key moments to get us over the top.”

Central outscored West Salem by 10 points at the foul line and by 16 with players off the bench — the Panthers received all of their points from starters — to win its third game in five days. Sophomore Anthony Jones led the RiverHawks with seven rebounds, and Servais had a team-high four assists.

West Salem was led by senior Kyle Hehli’s game-high 22 points, but he made 8 of 23 shots and 4 of 15 from long range. Nathan Karr added 11 points and Spencer Kammel a team-high six rebounds.

“I think we were lucky enough to catch them on a night when their shots weren’t falling,” Fergot said of the Panthers.

ONALASKA — Senior Will Huelskamp scored 32 points in addition to grabbing nine rebounds and recording five steals and four assists for the Knights (13-4), who won their sixth game in a row.

Huelskamp made 13 of 19 shots and 3 of 5 from the 3-point line. He is averaging 17.5 points per game during Luther’s current winning streak and is shooting 54.1 percent from the floor over his past three.

Senior Synclair Byus added 19 points and senior Jackson Kendall 10 assists and six steals while the Knights outscored the Rangers (6-12) by 21 points after halftime.

Logan was led by sophomore Jameson Degenhardt’s 10 points and received eight more to go with five rebounds from freshman Tommy Check.
