HOLMEN — The Holmen High School girls wrestling team crowned five individual champions and will have 10 competitors go after opportunities to qualify for the WIAA state tournament next week after outscoring all other teams during the Holmen Regional at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse on Friday.
The Vikings scored 269.5 points to easily finish ahead of second-place Eau Claire North (174) and third-place Eau Claire Memorial (118). Arcadia was seventh (61), Onalaska/Luther 11th (22), G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro 12th (21) and West Salem/Bangor 14th (11).
Seniors Haley Dezelske, Allison Weiss and Alexa Szak and sophomores Kaytlynn Lambries and Avalee Euler all won brackets for Holmen, which advanced the highest numbers of wrestlers to next Friday’s sectional at Eau Claire North.
Lambries (28-4) advanced to the 107-pound final with a 17-second semifinal pin before handing Osseo-Fairchild’s Aaliyah Zamora (28-8) an 11-8 defeat in that championship bout. Dezelske (28-9) won at 114 with quarterfinal and semifinal pins and a technical fall over Eau Claire North’s Mariah Hull (30-14) in her final.
Weiss (24-15) prevailed at 120 by pinning all three of her opponents. She finished Eau Claire Memorial’s Anne Green (25-8) in 1:09 for the championship. Szak (16-9) wrestled twice at 138 and won both matches by pin, needing just 2:56 to beat Eau Claire Memorial’s Abby Strayer (20-10) in the final.
Euler (26-15) only had to wrestle once, but she dominated Eau Claire North’s Samantha Wieczorek (20-13) and won the title with a pin in 1:06.
Peyton Kratochvill (21-16, 126, third place), Jozie Collins (17-20, 132, third), Natalie Markos (12-21, 145, second), Celia Drogseth (10-16, 152, second), Sophia Walter (24-7, 185, second) also qualified to compete for the Vikings in the sectional.
The top two finishers at each weight in the sectional qualify to compete at the state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 27-March 1.
ARCADIA: Three sophomores qualified for the sectional and one of them heads there as a regional champion for the Raiders.
Kalyce Sobotta (30-5) won the 132 bracket with a semifinal pin and impressive championship victory over Sparta’s Veda Lepley (33-9). Sobotta handed Lepley a 12-5 loss in the championship bout.
Linnet Barrios (2-25) and Ava Knopps (5-12) also qualified for Arcadia at 145 and 165, respectively. Barrios was fourth and Knopps third.
ONALASKA/LUTHER: Freshman Megan Ramsey (28-14, 126) and sophomore Arianna Stugen (7-18, 138) placed sixth and fifth, respectively, and didn’t advance out of the regional.
G-E-T/MELROSE-MINDORO: The Titans have a sectional qualifier in sophomore Payten Craig (20-8), who had a big night at 120. Craig lost her semifinal bout to Dezeske but came back to beat River Falls’ Izzy Davenport (25-8) 8-1 and Eau Claire North’s Hull (30-14) by technical fall for second place.
WEST SALEM/BANGOR: Freshman Ihlee Schniepp-Duffy (24-19) placed fifth at 114 and qualified for the fourth-place match but was pinned. The fifth-place finish ended her season.
Richland Center Regional
RICHLAND CENTER — The Logan/Central co-op placed 11th with 42 points, and Aquinas tied for 12th with 37 in a meet won by Kickapoo/La Farge (146).
Senior Sophia Paulson won a championship for the Blugolds, and the co-op advanced three competitors through third- and fourth-place finishes.
Paulson (24-5) won both matches she wrestled at 145 by pin. She beat Ithaca/Weston’s Briella Granger (0-18) in 28 seconds and Kickapoo/La Farge’s Mara Hubele (12-17) in 1:27.
Logan/Central received sectional-qualifying performances from sophomores Emylie Vang, Rachel Hang and Myrikal Johnson.
Hang (19-6) posted a third-place finish at 126, while Vang (10-12, 120) and Johnson (11-13, 165) placed fourth.
Hang won by major decision in her third-place match but didn’t get to challenge for second due an earlier loss. Hang beat Reedsburg’s Olivia Mislivecek (17-13) by a 20-10 score to qualify.
Vang recorded one pin and went 1-2 in wrestled matches, while Johnson went 2-2 and wrestled four times. Johnson won twice by pin and was pinned twice, getting the qualifying spot by finishing Kickapoo/La Farge’s Maddy Wojczak (13-18) at 1:32 in the fourth-place matchup.
