WAUNAKEE — The Holmen High School volleyball team exacted some revenge by beating an opponent that kept it from becoming a WIAA Division 1 state qualifier a year ago.
The sixth-seeded Vikings knocked off third-seeded Waunakee 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 27-25 on Saturday and qualified for a sectional semifinal against seventh-seeded Madison Memorial in DeForest on Thursday.
The Warriors beat Holmen in three sets during last season’s sectional finals.
Holmen (22-10) won its fourth straight regional championship behind 19 kills from junior Brenna Schmidt and 17 from junior Charley Casey. The Vikings dominated the two middle sets and held on the fourth to complete the victory.
Junior Macy Kline had 16 digs and junior Makenna McHugh 18 assists for the Vikings, who notched their seventh win in a row.
Madison Memorial advanced to the sectional with a 24-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22 win over second-seeded Sauk Prairie.
Middleton 3, Onalaska 0
MIDDLETON — The ninth-seeded Hilltoppers (20-9) were swept by the top-seeded Cardinals 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 after beating Central in the semifinal round.
Junior Makena McGarry had a team-high seven kills for Onalaska, which also received 23 assists from senior Ellie Mascotti. Senior Emma Hayes had six kills and two blocks, and sophomore Kendall Carlson five kills and four blocks.
Freshman Makenzie Bauer led the Hilltoppers with eight digs.
DIVISION 3
Aquinas 3, Richland Center 2
The top-seeded Blugolds held on to beat the fourth-seeded Hornets but needed five sets and a record-breaking performance from Sammy Davis to do it.
Davis broke the program record for kills in a five-set match with 33, and the Blugolds (25-4) prevailed 21-25, 25-15, 25-12, 21-25, 16-14 at the Reinhart Athletic Complex. Davis broke a record previously held by Courtney Conway from a match in 2016.
Aquinas will host second-seeded Cuba City at 7 p.m. Thursday in a sectional semifinal.
Senior Addy Foor added 20 kills and 23 digs for the Blugolds, and sophomore Adelaide Bezemek (36) and junior Lauren Von Ruden (33) combined for 69 assists. Davis also had 13 digs for Aquinas, which lost to Cuba City in last year’s sectional final.

Mount Horeb 3, West Salem 1
MOUNT HOREB — The third-seeded Panthers (30-8) had a seven-match win streak snapped in a 25-13, 25-13, 24-26, 25-21 loss to the second seed.
