Saturday girls basketball: Aquinas emerges in battle of area powerhouses

CALEDONIA — Aquinas High School girls basketball coach Dave Donarski knew long ago that he would learn something about his team a couple of days after Christmas.

Caledonia represents a challenge that Donarski welcomes, and the visiting Blugolds tackled it well with a 57-41 victory over the Warriors.

Senior Sammy Davis had 26 points and 12 rebounds as Aquinas (8-1), ranked eighth in Division 3 by the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, ran its winning streak to eight games. The Warriors (7-3) lost for the second straight time and scored their fewest number of points in a game.

Caledonia, which has won 81 of its past 101 games, couldn’t get on track offensively and scored just 18 points in the first half. Senior Aubrie Klug, who averaged 27.7 points over the previous six games, was held to 11.

Davis, a Bradley University commit, scored 16 points in the first half to help the Blugolds to a 17-point lead and blocked three shots. Senior Alaina Elias added 13 points and five of her team’s 19 steals.

Junior Ava Fernholz had a team-high seven steals to go with six points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Eva Willenbring, in addition to being the primary defender on Klug, scored eight points to go with four assists.

The Warriors were led by senior Nicole Banse, who made three 3-pointers and scored 17 points.
